IN FEDERAL HONORS LIST

CANBERRA, December 31.

Mrs. Menzies, wife of the Prime Mini-ster, has been created a Dame Grand Cross of the British Empire in the Federal New Year Honors list issued today.

The award, certain to be one of the most popular of the new list, was made for her years of incessant and unselfish performance of public duty.

Six new knights have been created, including Sir Harry Wunderly, Commonwealth Director of Tuberculosis and for-merly of the Royal Adelaide Hospital. He has been made a Knight Bachelor. Other knights in the Fede-lal list are: — Air Marshal Sir Richard Williams, of Victoria, Direc-tor-General of Civil Avia-tion since 1946, and the first Australian to reach the rank of Air Marshal. Sir William Allison, of Victoria, past president of the Associated Chambers of Commerce. Sir Daniel McVey, of NSW, former DirectorGeneral of Posts and Tel-graphs. Sir Walter Merriman, a leading NSW stud sheep breeder. Plane Pioneer Sir Lawrence Wackett, of Victoria, a pioneer of the Australian aircraft industry. Sir Richard Williams is a Knight Commander of the British Empire, and the others are Knights Bache-lor. Sir Harry Wunderly now lives in Canberra. Salvation Army Deputy Assistant Commissioner J. C. Semmens, of Unley (SA), has been made a MBE for his work among the troops in Korea. Other SA awards include MBE's for Maj. D. B. Dun-stan, of Somerton, and Maj. F. R. W. Charlton, of Linden Park. Maj. Dulcie Vera Thompson, Deputy Mat-ron at the British Com-monwealth General Hos-pital at Kure since 1952, has been made an Asso-ciate of the Royal Red Cross. The two captains of the RAAF Canberra jets which took part in the England-NZ Air Race this year have received awards. Wg-Cmdr. D. R. Cuming has received an OBE, and Sq-Ldr. P. F. Raw. DFC, an Air Force Cross. Wg-Cmdr. Cuming flew the first Canberra jet to Australia. Test Pilot An AFC has also been awarded to Flt-Lt. W. H. Scott, who was test pilot of the first Australian-built Avon Sabre jet fighter, and who broke through the sound barrier for the first time in Australia. The citation says his suc-cessful and courageous fly-ing of this aircraft during tests, coupled with his devo-tion to duty, has added much to the prestige of the RAAF. R. G. H. Irving, OBE, Australian Staff Corps, of Melbourne—has served con- tinuously for more than 37 years, and throughout the whole of his service he has set a splendid example of efficiency and zeal. McNicoll, GM, RAN, of Melbourne— For outstanding service in the administration of the Australian part in the atomic weapons tests at the Monte Bello Islands. tralian Staff Corps (of Som-erton, SA), who served in regimental and staff ap-pointments during World War II, and with BCOF, Japan, after the war and graduated at the Staff Col-lege in 1943. Since 1949 he has held ap-pointments in Headquarters, Central Command, including appointment as DAQMG and later as DAAG. Maj. Frank Ronald Wil-liam Charlton, RAE (of Lin-den Park, SA), who enlisted in the Engineers (CMF) in 1937, transferred to the AIF in May, 1940, and served in the Middle East and South-West Pacific until May, 1945. He was appointed Officer Commanding, 3rd Field squadron, RAE, in May, 1948. His service with that unit has been outstanding and is reflected in the high stand-ard of technical training md morale it has achieved. Maj. C. C. Dulcie Vera Thomp-son, RAANC (of Adelaide, SA), who has been deputy matron at the British Com-monwealth General Hospital, Kure, since May, 1952. She has also been respon-sible for Australian nursing officers and other ranks em-ployed at the dressing sta-tion at Ebisu Camp, Tokio, and at the British Common-wealth Communication Zone Medical Unit at Seoul. Her nursing skill and de-votion to the interest of patients have been of the highest order. She has displayed an outstandingly high sense of devotion to duty and her work has won the praise of the UK, Queen Alexandra's Royal Army Nursing Corps and the Canadian Nursing Service. Matron A. T. Cleary, RAAF (of Hawthorn Vic.), who joined RAAF nursing service in 1941 and has shown outstanding devotion to duty throughout her career. She is now matron of No. 3 RAAF Hospital. BRITISH EMPIRE MEDAL CPO A. Sly, RAN (of Flin-iers Naval Depot, Vic.) ; Sgt. (T/WO Class II.) H. J. B. Bailey Burrell, MM, Royal Australian Intantry Corps, Vic); Staff Sgt. (T/WO Class II) G. J. A. William Nug Plunkett, RAASC (of St. Peters, SA), now attached to Headquarters, Keswick. He joined the army in 1924 as a senior cadet, transferred to the CMF in 1926 and the PMF in January, 1939. He spent five years in the AIF including 3½ years as a prisoner of war in Malaya and Siam. Staff Sgt. R. J. Roberts, Royal Aust. Armored Corps (Vic.); Pte. (temporary Sergeant) Eileen Maud Baker, RAANC (of Bris-bane); Pte. (T/Sgt.) Robert Brian Corcoran, Royal Aust. Inf. Corps (of Tantanoola, SA), assistant infantry in-structor of 1 Commonwealth Division Battle School, Japan. He served in Korea from June, 1951 to June, 1952, rising from private to ser-geant in this period. From November, 1952, to June 1953, he served on the instructional staff of the Australian Reinforcement Coy. His knowledge and expe-rience have been of great value in training reinforce-ments. CpL (T/Sgt.) R. A. Hines, RAE (of Kure, Japan) Sgt. Herbert Vercoe Carne, RAAF (of Mallala, SA), who entered the RAAF in 1941 and served throughout the war in various units. He was demobilised in November, 1945 and re-enlisted in August, 1949. He has been stationed at Mallala as an engine fitter since 1949. His ability is outstand-ing and to a large extent has been responsible for the good record of No. 24 Squadron and the high

KNIGHT COMMANDER OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE (K.B.E.) Air Marshal Richard Wil-liams, CB, CBE, DSO (of Melbourne)—In recognition of a most distinguished career in peace and in war in the service of Australia. Early in 1939 he became the first Australian to reach the rank of Air Marshal. Was appointed Director-General of Civil Aviation in 1946, and the civil aviation services in Australia have developed rapidly with a safety record unequalled in the world. Has led important delegations to overseas conferences, and has been Federal president of the Air Force Association for 16 years. KNIGHTS BACHELOR William John Allison (of Mont Albert, Vic.)—For out- standing work for Australian commerce, and much honor-ary and valuable work for the Commonwealth in rela-tion to the business of in-vestigation of defence ex-penditure and the control of imports. Is a past president of Associated Chambers of Commerce. Daniel McVey, CMG, MIE (Aust.), FIRE (Aust.), of Pymble (NSW) — A former Director General of Posts and Telegraphs, who re-signed from the Common-wealth Public Service in 1946 to become managing director of a large company. Has con-tinued to render distin-guished service to the Com-monwealth in an honorary capacity. Walter Thomas Merriman (of Yass, NSW)— For out-standing services to Austra-lia in the sheep breeding industry. Wg - Cmdr. Lawrence James Wackett, DFC, AFC, BSC (Melb.), AFRAES (of Beaumaris, Victoria)—For his outstanding pioneering services to the Australian aircraft industry in peace and in war. In recent years he has been the driving force behind the production of Sabre jet aircraft in Aus-tralia. Dr. Harry Wyatt Wunder-ly, MD, ChB (Melb.), MRCP (Lond.), FRACP, FCCP (of Canberra), Director of Tu-berculosis, Commonwealth Department of Health — In recognition of his distin-guished record as the out-standing authority on tuber-culosis in Australia.
