GOLDMINE TO CLOSE Existence Of. Agnew In Jeopardy KALGOORLIE, Jan. 23: The Emu goldmine, one of the de Bernales group, is expected to close within a fortnight. Orebreaking ceased today. The existence of Agnew is in jeopardy as the mine is its sole support. Because of insufficient capital to carry out development work the company is unable to go on. Adepd to this is the burden of the high cost of production and shorter working hours. The entire staff has received a month's notice of dismissal and salvage operations are already in progress underground. It is proposed to pull the pumps and allow the mine to flood as soon as the available ore, has been taken out. The mine, which has approximately 80 men on its payroll supports a population of more than 200 persons who will be forced to find a living and housing accommodation elsewhere.
