Their-British built motor car. which had been detained hy the Customs offi-cials since they arrived on the tanker Unda from Singapore on Monday, was
released as a result of the interven-tion of Mr. S. M. Bruce, the Prime. Minister.
New tyres were fitted to the car, which was used by Mr. Birtles in establishing his former record from Darwin to Melbourne.' The autographs , of several well-known Australians were
to he seen on thc body of the car.
Mr. Birtles. has drawn a scathing camparison of the treatment' of aviators arriving from overseas and that meted out to him by the authorities'. They will journey by easy stages to Brisbane, owing to the fact that both his com-panion and himself have not quito got the Burmese jungle fever out of their systems.
