Count Detro, a gentleman of foreign nobility and possessing, 'J vi re physical attractions, gains Dr. Aud* drey'« consent to «. marriage with her daughter, on condition that he under-goes a medical examination and pre-sente a clean bill of health. Thc. count's past dissipations and inaction with a disease causo him to hesitate, . but believing that he has long, since been cured be -undergoes the test. By the strange workings of fate Dr. Worth make» tho examination and discovers traces of a disease. He warn« the count that ho must defer his marriage with Dorothy, but tho count, knowing of Dr. Worth's affection for her, bclievé» an ulterior motive underlies his discovery and refuse« to postpone the marriage. Dr. Worth finally threatens to reveal tho truth to Dorothy's mother, and th» count, knowing of Dr. Worth's rathol* adverse financial cir-cumstance», bribes him to give him a, clean bill of health. He i<¡ indignant at the offer, but n Budden illness of his mother prompts him to accept the count'« bribe in order to save her life. Meanwhile preparations for Dorothy's marriage are proceeding apace. On the .day of the wedding Dr. Worth de* eldo« to toll the truth, and tells Dor-othy as the is at the altar.
