THE BACHELOR TAX.

ROMAN CATHOLIC PRIESTS'

OBJECTION.

Sydney, Wednesday.

A meeting of the Roman Catholics of the diocese of Maitland protested against the taxing of priests and bro-thers of the church under the Federal taxation proposals. Dr. Dwyer, Bishop of Maitland, said that he personally would not pay the bachelor tax. He would, he said, adopt an attitude of passive resistance, and he thought all

the priests of the diocese would do the same.

[Mr. Hughes has stated that if con- scription is carried on December 20, the bachelor tax will almost certainly be repealed as a natural consequence.]
