ROUND THE PICKETS

'THE town literally was x thrown open to us,' says Len Paech former Sturt player, nnnt smTOtarv and treasurer of

the SANF Association, in commenting on the visit by a combined association side to Port Pirie last week-end. Most impressive feature, he says, of the visit was the importance attached by Port Pirie talk to visits by league and association teams and officials. He pays special tribute to the attention danced on the metropolitan party by the Port Pirie Association president L. Wundke, and secretary John Hocking. The association team's victory, by four goals (the greatest margin between the teams to seven games), was not won without a Hard fight. Ted Whelan (Port Adelaide) won the trophy presented by the Port Pirie Association, and. L. Veal (Port Pirie) that given by the visiting association. Ray Cock (Glenelg) and George Jobson (Port Pirie), the latter being readily recalled because of the good football he played with South Adelaide, also were outstanding. Messrs. A. R. Tyson. George Patfull (chairman), J. A. Jones (selector), F. O'Gorman and P. L. Wright provided trophies for the winning side, and these went to Cock, Phil Mabarrack (West Adelaide), B. Potter (Glenelg), Cliff Todd (West Adelaide) and Brian Johns (Sturt). At a dinner on Saturday evening presentations were made to John Hocking (local secretary) and Len Paech (who managed the visiting party). ? ? ? ? ? WHYALLA had a comfort' able win over Great Northern in the match at Whyalla on Sunday. The scores were 21.16 to 10.8. Stars were R. C. V. Hill (Whyalla) and J. Bothwell (Great Northern). On the previous day at Whyalla Whyalla Juniors 14.14 beat the visiting SAN Junior Colts, 11.15. Best players were B. P. Hannah (Whyalla) and B. Hill (Colts). In the previous series of Whyalla League games, Marcus Boyall, former Glenelg player, was adjudged best player for the Central team. ? ? ? ? TO celebrate the 50th anni-*? versary of its foundation, Sturt Football Club will hold a reunion of past and present players, officials and trainers at unley Town Hall on August 16. Secretary Jack ('Wizzo') Wadham, 10 Hawkes avenue, Da Costa Park, said yesterday:— 'The whereabouts of many of the older members and former players and officials are unknown to us. If these addresses can be forwarded to me as early as possible we will be able to do what we want to do — send them

invitations to attend this celebration, which looks like being one of the best we've ever had.' ? * ? ? TT'S nice to coach a team which M wins by 127 points, but a lot of the rilt is rubbed off the

ginger - bread when the result is published in reverse. In the country section of 'The Advertiser' recentlyit it was reported that East Gambler 20.18, d. Millicent 1.5. It should have read the other

way round. Writes a Millicent correspondent:— 'Echoes of the cheers that greeted some brilliant effort by Jim Templeton. South Adelaide and State half -forward a few years ago, may now be heard down in this corner of the State. 'Jim is captain-coach of Millicent to the SE and Border League He found the club licking its wounds after a sorry performance in 1949 when it won only two matches, but deriving what comfort it could from recollections of past glories when the No. 1 magpie jacket of Millicent was worn by C. McDonald (North Adelaide), by Gordon Barbary (Glenelg) and Ken Johnson (Port Adelaide). 'Now, after eight games, Millicent is third on the premiership table, following its loss of the first two matches with five wins to the next six. Jim Templeton's name stands high. ♦ » ? » KEN MCGREGOR, whose 'handsome, sun -tanned features and physique' apparently have the Wimbledon women a-twitter, was a very promising footballer when with West Adelaide Colts. Most people in Adelaide know that, but not many know that Ken was a product of the South Adelaide district. He was cleared to West Adelaide because of his father's long association with that club. ? ? ? ? WHAT'S become of the Smith's and the Jones's? In the last series of league football matches there was not one Smith nor one Jones to the 160 players. But there is a plurality of other names nowadays. The Edwardses lead the way. This season six players named Edwards have made then- appearance in league ranks! In second place is the Williams clan with four representatives. Kevin J. Hynes, Moldavia street, Glandore, points out that for sheer coincidence, however, the North AdelaideWest Torrens teams of 20 years ago would be hard to beat. Each had a Fleet (Harry and Alby), each a Munn (Ray and Lou) and each a Lock (Sid and Jack) when they played each other on June 7, 1930. * ? ? ? fTILBURN, which boasts the best record of any team in the northern suburban competition since 1925, will hold its 25th anniversary social in the RSL hall, Way street, Kilburn. on July 12. J. W. Summersides, who will

be remembered as a league player a few years ago, says that it will be 'one large bucks' turn that night.' He appeals, on behalf of the club committee, to all members, past and present, to advise the committee by tomorrow whether they will be present. The social secretary is A. J. Olavesen, 360 Junction road, WingHeld Kilburn, which won the premiership of the North Adelaide District Association to 1928, 1933, 1934, 1935, 1937, 1938, 1939, 1940, 1946 and 1947, has been a prolific nursery for league clubs. A few of its products to recent years have been— J. Latimer, C. Homan, G. Hogan, D. West, B. Cearns, B. Neville, K. Carroll and L. Hill (North Adelaide), A. Oatway (North Adelaide and West Adelaide), J. Summersides (North Adelaide, West Adelaide and Glenelg), D. Thompson (South Adelaide), F. Bolton (Nortii Adelaide and South Adelaide), F. Cutler (West Torrens). Jack Forrester, secretary of North Adelaide, was a former Kilburn player. The district used to be called Chicago, but residents became so fed up with mail arriving very late marked 'Not known here' and with an American postmark, that they changed it to Kilburn. ? ? * ? PORT Adelaide Football Club will entertain two district teams— Semaphore Park and Ethelton — at a concert at Alberton Oval on Sunday morntog. The club makes a practice of inviting junior teams to these concerts during the season. As a result of one of these inviations the club induced Harold McDonald, one of its present centre wingmen, to play with the league team. ♦ ? ? * ?TRAMWAYS will play a -'- match against RAAF (Mallala) at Unley Oval next Wednesday.
