Former Mayor Of Toowong Dead

Mr. Archibald Watson, Mayor of Toowong before the establishment of Greater Brisbane, and later Vice Mayor of Greater Brisbane, died yes-

terday after a long illness. He was in his 67th year. Upon the inauguration of Greater Brisbane in 1925, as Mayor of Toowong

he was selected to represent the area on the new council. He be-came Vice-Mayor, and during the temporary ab-sences from the city of the first Lord Mayor (Mr. W. A. Jolly, M.H.R.) he filled the office. When Mr. Jolly retired from the council three months be-fore the expira-tion of his second term in 1931 Mr. Watson automati-cally became Lord Mayor.

In the Brisbane City Council Mr. Watson was appointed chairman of the tramway and electricity commit-tee, and largely because of his per-sistent efforts the council power house at New Farm was established. Temperance Chairman He began his business career with Watson, Ferguson, and Co., Ltd., and later joined the late Mr. W. Carter in a printing and bookbinding business. Later he founded the Queensland Bed-stead Co., Pty., Ltd., with which he had since been associated. He was an enthusiastic member of the Queensland Chamber of Manufac-tures, and in 1920 he was president. He was chairman of the Queensland Temperance League, and had been chairman of directors of The Can-berra temperance hotel since its in ception. He was a keen bowler, and was past president of the Toowong Bowling Club. He was born in Scotland, and came to Queensland as a child. In 1901 he married Miss Maud Clark, daughter of ex-Detective Senior-sergeant Clark. He is survived by his widow, two sons, Messrs. George and Wilbur Watson, and three daughters. FIRE HOSE COUPLINGS— At yes terday's meeting of the Metropolitan Fire Brigades Board it was announced that the Department of Health and Home Affairs had accepted a tender for the supply of 300 pairs of couplings to be used with 25,000 feet of hose which will be available this week.
