AUSTRIAN CONDUCTOR A.B.C. Engagement. SYDNEY, Oct 17.-The general manager of the Australian Broadcasting Commission (Mr Moses) announced today that the A.B.C. had engaged as one of its overseas conductors for 1946 the Continentalborn conductor Karl RankL He will arrive at the end of next March and will spend at least 13 weeks in Australia. In all Karl Rankl will conduct about 20 concerts, including about 14 programmes. Aged 46, Karl Rankl is one of the youngest conductors to visit this country. An Austrian awaiting naturalisation, he has been in England since shortly after Munich. Though not Jewish he was forced to leave Germany owing to his opposition to the Nazis. Sir Adrian Boult, conductor of the British Broadcasting Commission Symphony Orchestra, and Mr Kenneth Wright, deputy director of 1 music at the' B.BC, assisted Karl Rankl and his wife to escape to England. He was acclaimed by the cri- l tics after his first London concert. Since then he has condycted the: B.B.C. symphony orchestra with great success on many occasions and] has been a frequent guest-conductor with the london Symphony Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Liverpool Symphony Orchestra.
