THE GILDED "WEST.

ANDREW ARDAGH, an elderly man, has died at the hospital from injuries received at the railway station through sleepers falling on him a few weeks ago.

The following sums were sent away from the colony by money orders during the

month of May:-London, £4000; South j Australia, £11,000; Victoria, £31,000 ; New South Wales, 614,000; Queensland,

£2000 ; Tasmani-4, £1600 ; New Zealand, j

£700 ; total, £67,311.

The gold yield for May wai 59,llloz. 15dwt. 3gr., valued at £224,612 13s. 61. This includes 10,000oz. obtained from oie exported to South Aus tra'ia.

Mr. J. H. Schickel, the manager and brewer for the Kalgoorlie Brewery and Ice Company, died at Kalgoorlie on Thursday morning last from pueumonia (says the Perth Morning Herald of May 25). In addition to this complaint, Mr. Schickel had to grapple with typhoid, and, despite his good constitution, after seven days' confinement to his room he passed away. Mr. Schickel was a native of Germany, and had spent about 17 years in the Australian colonies. He was well known in Adelaide as the

proprietor of tho Cdtdonian Brewery at Hyde Park, which he owned up to the time of his death. Mr. Schickel was a keen

politician, and contested the district of Barossa in the democratic interest at the general election of 1893, when, although unsuccessful, he polled extreme!y well. Mr.

Schickel was 35 years old.
