ELEGANT ELEPHANT

● He is elegant as ele-phants go! And he's quickly knitted in

plain garter-stitch.

SURE to be a great

favorite with the children, this elephant will be a durable toy.

Materials: 5 balls grey Pea-cock Kooba; 2 small buttons; 1 pr. No. 12 knitting needles; kapok or suitable filling;

thread of black wool.

This toy is worked in double wool and garter-stitch.

TRUNK (Make 2)

Cast on 4 sts. K 2 rows.

3rd Row: K 2 tog., k to last st., k twice into last st.

K 3 rows.

Rep. last 4 rows once.

11th Row: K to last st., k twice into last st.

12th Row: Knit Rep. last 2 rows.

15th Row: K twice into 1st st., k to end.

16th Row: Knit.

17th Row: K twice into 1st st., k to last 2 sts., k 2 tog.

K 3 rows.

21st Row: K twice into 1st st., k to end.

GREY wool has been used for this elephant, but children would be equally delighted if you made it in a bright color. Small buttons make the eyes.

TO MAKE UP

Join underbody across cast-off edge.

Join the underbody legs and legs of body at the sides, leav-ing an opening at the bottom, then sew up body, leaving an opening on back for stuffing. Sew pads in bottom of legs. Fold tail in half and sew up, leaving an opening at cast-on edge. Turn right side out and stuff well. Sew up opening. Sew into position. Sew ears on the side of head at cast-on edge and pointed part of ears at bottom. Work toes with black wool. Sew eyes into position.
