EARLY DAYS OF GEELONG.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE ARGUS

Sir. The article on Saturday by the Rev.

M Maddern on the above subject takes the thoughts of an old "Geelongite" back to the middle of last century. One can have no quarrel with him about the per-

sons and the subjects he mentions. They were all of importance at the times about which he is writing. It is, however, re-markable how many omissions there are from the lists he gives; and I trust he will pardon me if I point out a few which Occur to me. The names of the doctors

whom he mentions comprise, as far as I know, all those of any importance in the profession. It is strange, however, that

from his liat of clergymen at leadt five names are missing, viz., the Revs. Love and W M Baird, of St Andrew's Presbyterian Church ; thevRev. C. S. Y. Price, Of McKillop street Congregational Church (the building was afterwards sold to the Defence department, and became the orderly room of the Geelong Battery of Artillery); the Rev. Frederick Strickland, of the Free Church of England in Ryrie street, opposite the post-office; and, last the Rev. Astley Cooper, of St Paul's Church of England. It is remarkable, too, that he should have forgotten Sir Charles Sladen, M.L.C., the Roadknights, father and son, the Buckland brothers, B.W.

Wheatland, secretary and librarian of the Mechanics Institue from its foundation until his death; William Weir, town clerk of Geelong for over 40 years; H. G. Roebuck town treasurer for a similar period;
