Henty Alexia Kauper, who died at Lennox-street, Richmond, recently, aged 54, waa a leading pioneer ot Aus-tralian radio. He was the first tech-nician in the world to broadcast, the heart beats of animals. In Adelaide, ka 1925, he put on a mock Zs .ding of a Japanese army, accompanied by such realistic sound effects that be created a mild civilian panie. He built many of the early Australian transmitters. For the past 10 years he was 3DB's supervisory engineer, and built much of that station's equipment He had been engaged in aircraft manufacture for the past year. '

"Harry" Kauper's belief that radio s main function should be entertainment had a big influence on the early course of commercial broadcasting, and his views on programmes were widely respected.

Kauper flew "with Harry Hawker in the last war. He invented the Kauper-Sonwith synchronising appa-ratus enabling machine-guns to be fired through a propeller, took an active oart in.early Australian motion pic-ture work, and was largely responsible for the pedal wireless.

He invented an electric oscillating dey'"e which' indicated the presence of minerals underground, and wa en-rolled by a band of Melbourne enthu-siasts who. spent their week-ends and holidays for two yean searching tn the wildest part of.
