ST. HELENS LIKELY PREMIERS

Oxley Down 3 Goals

Following their splendid effort against Oxley on Saturday, St. Helens now are firm favourites for the Soccer premiership. Bundamba

sun are level wiin tnem on points, but Saints' fast combined play suggests that they willbe very hard to beat. . '?',.??' In Coleman and Young St. Helens have two of the most consistent goalscorers in club football. Each netted two goals on Saturday — a very creditable effort against such a strong defence as that of Oxley. Henderson, the right wing, is- another first-class player. His centres usually are very accurate, and his goal on Saturday from the touchline was a gem. Oxley were unable to find a counter for the positional play of their opponents, which time and again tore holes in the defence. Brittain, the State centre-forward, was given very little rope by Malcolmson, and this rendered the Oxley vanguard a feeble force in front of goal. STARKOFF SHINES A splendid display of goal-keeping by Starkoff largely was responsible for Corinthians holding Booval to a draw. It was a Ereat efiort on the cart of

Corinthians, particularly as a number of their best players are absent on the northern tour. Starkoff made many fine saves for Corinthians, and he was well supported by Enright, the fullback. Another player to catch the sye was Evans, the right half. In a desperate finish Booval tried lard to win, but the defence held. The loss of a point may prove costly to Booval in the fight for 'the premiership. In a dull game at Bundamba, the lome side had little difficulty in finishing in front. Their display, how;ver, was not impressive and they will iave to do much better to maintain :heir position. Their centre-forward. ECitching, again did well, scoring two ?oals. and the experiment of playing 3ibb in the forward line appears to oe a success. PINEAPPLES SURPRISE Few supporters gave Pineapple Rovers much chance of defeating Shafston United at Raymond Park, but they rose to the occasion well, and thoroughly deserved their success. With about 10 minutes to go Shafstons appeared to have the game won, but when an attack of cramp forced Dowie to relinquish the centre-half position, Pineapple showed unexpected combination and scored two goals. Ellison and Donaldson, the full-backs, played great football for the winners, and Evans and Manson did well in the vanguard. Dowie was outstanding for Shafstons, whose performance was most disappointing. With several second division players in the team Brothers proved no- match for Latrobe at , Lang Park. Lawrence, the Brothers' goalkeeper, again made some good saves, and Muir, who usually plays full back, showed his. versatility on the left wing. The games resulted: St. Helens 5 v Oxley 2, Bundamba 3 v Evans Deakin 0, Corinthians 1 v Booval 1, Latrobe 5 v Brothers 2, Pineapple Rovers 3 v Shafston United 2. ? 1
