ATTACK MUST BE IMPROVED

Better Forward Line Is Soccer Need

THOUGH the Queensland team did much better than expected against New South Wales, it is obvious that changes will have to be made in the side to meet Palestine next month. The success of the team in the first inter-State game should

not blind the selectors to the fact that the display of the forwards in front of goal, especially in the first half, was far below the necessary standard. The two games showed conclusively that the maroons have not overcome their biggest weakness — hesitancy when shooting.

To liven up the attack the selec-tors will either have to give new forwards a chance to show their ability, or impress on the present vanguard the necessity for en-deavouring to score at the first opportunity. Both Donaldson and Kitching played well enough in the inter-State games to retain their positions, but Brittaln, Nelson, and Dale were not impressive. If the selectors decide to make changes in the vanguard Jackson, the Eastern Suburbs centre, may get a chance, while Ridler (Y.M.C.A.), Wil-liams (Blackstone), Ives (Easts), and F. Alexander (Latrobe) are all cap-able wingers. Nelson is such a clever player that he should be kept in the side, but Hud-son (Easts) and W. James (Bundamba) may be strong challengers. It would not surprise If Lawrie was brought back as right half, and Ers-kine (Booval), Seeney (Latrobe), or Warrendorp (Y.M.C.A.) may be seri-ously considered for the right back position. Easts May Surprise Leading teams should retain their places in the second round of premier ship fixtures to-morrow. The only upset may be the Booval Eastern Suburbs game at Heath Park. Booval are well in the running for the premiership, but Easts are such a greatly improved side that they must be given a good chance of winning. Booval's forward line, especially Don-aldson, Nason. and Greenhill, is likely to get goals against any defence, and Clarkson, G. Pettersen. and Lindsay will need to be at their top. East's chances depend to a great extent on the forwards. If Jackson, Hudson, and Ives show their real ability they may take the points. Y.M.C.A., the leaders, should not have much difficulty in beating Corin-thians at Lang Park. Corinthians have a fairly good defence, but Brit-tain, Nelson, and Shaw are likely to find the weak spots. A close game' is likely at Ebbw Vale, where Latrobe and St. Helens are en-gaged. In Nevill. Rlgby, Seeney, and Crewdson Latrobe have the nucleus of a solid back line, and Saints' forwards

will have to show improvement to get goals. The Latrobe vanguard also has shown a weakness in front of goal, and unless they overcome this fault to-morrow they may lose the game. Bundamba are favoured to win against Blackstone. The solid play of Roderick, Gibb, and Petie will be a severe handicap for the Blackstone forwards to overcome, but Kitching and Williams will require watching.
