CLAREMONT OUTPLAYED. Swan Districts' Strong Finish. Completely dominating the play in the last quarter, Swan Districts defeated Claremont by 22 points at Claremont Oval on Saturday in a high-scoring match. Claremont kicked poorly, scoring only 15 goals from more than 34 direct shots, and it was beaten for pace. Its players fumbled a good deal and so rendered ineffective excellent work by several members of the team. Swan Districts played solidly (if at times without judgment) in every quarter and showed fine stamina and determination. The teams were:-CLAREMONT.-Backs: Sutherland, Batt, S. Moloney. Half-backs: R. Moloney, Clarke, Grieve. Centres: Edmondson, G. Moloney, Lynch. HBalfforwards: Reeves, Jones, 6. Headon. Forwards: Cook, Hopkins, Farley. Ruck: Maitland, Birningam, Hooper (rover). 19th man: Gutbrie (did not play). SWAN DISTraCTS.--Baerks: Zilko, Chandler, McInerney.. Half-backs: Randall, Sinclair, Ford. Centres: Krepp, Darmody, Mosey. Half-forwards: Avery, HBnter, Hall. Forwards: Park, Holdsworth, Gorn. Ruck: Forbes, Penberthy, Sweetapple (rover). 19th man: Sweet (did not play). UmPIRE.-V. Sparrow. Faster, surer and more forceful, Swan Districts quickly gained the ascendancy in the first quarter and goaled twice. Cook goaled for Claremont but the team was badly astray in its kicking and ground play. In the air Forbes gave Swan Districts a big advantage and, despite excellent play by G. Moloney, at centre, and by Clarke, at half-back, the Swan Districts team continued to forge ahead. It ran to a 21-point lead. A phenomenal 60-yard goal by Hopkins was the start of a Claremont rally but fumbling, crowding and wild passing rendered good play ineffective. Reeves goaled for Claremont on the bell and the quarter ended with the scores:-Swan Districts, 52; Claremont, 3.6. There was a sharp change in the complexion of the game at the opening of the second term and within six minutes Claremont had reduced Swan Districts' lead to one point. It then drew level Clarke performed brilliantly in stopping the fast-moving Swan Districts attack

and G. Moloney played coolly at centre. The play was indifferent, Swan Districts' vigour breaking down the pace of Claremont. When the play opened up, largely through the efforts of Swan Districts, there was little to choose between the teams. Swan Districts obtained a lead of a goal but Hopkins evened the scores again and, after several minutes' even play, Claremont took the lead for the first time when Cook goaled. At half-time, however, it led by only a point with 910 to 10.3, Gorn having goaled for Swan Districts. With a brilliant burst of play, Claremont added three goals in a few minutes in the third quarter and led by 21 points. Fine marking by Hopkins was an outstanding feature of the play. Playing at top pace and throwing their whole weight into the. game, Swan Districts recovered. Holdsworth (a dangerous forward) goaled twice and the game became exciting. Claremont was getting the bai well away from the ruck but kicking poorly to goal. Its total of behinds rse to 16 and it had to play desperately to hold a five-point lead at three-quarter time-1316 to 14.5. Finishing with characteristic pace and determination, Swan Districts gained a lead of eight points within five minutes of the start of the final quarter. For a time Claremont held firm but Swan Districts broke down the opposition and Holdsworth goaled twice within two minutes. Nine minutes from time Swan Districts led by 15 points and was finishing fester. Claremont, tired and disorganised, made a determined effort in the last' few minutes but it made no impression on Swan Districts, who held their lead without difficulty. The final scores were: SWAN DISTRICTS .. 20.11 (131pts.) CLAREMONT ...... 15.19 (109 pts.) Goal-kickers.--Swan Districts: Holdsworth (9), Gorn (3), Sweetapple (8), Hall (2), Forbes, Mclnnerney and Avery; Claremont: Hopkins (6), Cook (4), Reeves (3), Birmingham and Hooper. Swan Districts' two best players were Holdsworth, the goal-sneak, who kicked nine goals and Krepp, the winger. Krepp found top form and Holdsworth marked surely,. made position cleverly and kicked excellently. Gorn gave him valuable assistance in attack. Sweetapple, roving or placed, did a lot of useful work and Darmody played well (although beaten in the last quarter) at centre. Penberthy, Hall, Mosey, Forbes and Chandler (at times) also played well. S. Clarke played heroically in defence for Claremont and was the team's best man, although Hopkins, who took some phenomenal marks, was almost as good. Following and in attack, Reeves and Birmingham, the two goldfields players, acquitted themselves with great credit and gave Claremont a slight advantage in the ruck. At centre George Moloney was in good form and prevailed over Darmody in the last quarter. Cook, Batt (in two quarters) and Grieve also did well.
