TEMPERATE ARCTIC.

-o-

The discovery by American seal

fishers that of late there has been a remarkable increase in the mean tem-perature of the Arctic, and that in some parts of the Polar basin no ice has been seen less than 9 degrees from the North Pole, agrees with the ex-perience of many Arctic explorers in recent years. Just before the war a party of Russians exploring Nova Zembla discovered clear evidence of a branch of the Gulf Stream running north of that Arctic island, between it and Franz Josef Land, though all existening charts of that hot-water system place its most northerly ex-

tention well to the south of Nova

Zembla. Of late years evidence has accumulated that the Gulf Stream has been diverted, and there is little doubt but that any increase of Arctic tem-peratures must be caused by warm ocean currents coming up from south-erly latitudes.
