MR. E. J. STEVENS.

WELL-KNOWN QUEENSLAND

FIGURE PASSES AWAY.

Ok

A well-known figure in Queensland political life has passed away, in the

person of Ernest James Stevens, who

died in a Brisbane private hospital.

Stevens had suffered from ill-health

for some time and his death was not unexpected. Deceased, who was born in Melbourne, spent about 17½ years in

the Queensland Assembly, and over 21

years in the Legislative Council.

Mr. Stevens was Chairman of Direc-

tors of the Brisbane Newspaper Co. for over 20 years, retiring in 1916. He was a very ardent supporter of amateur sport in Brisbane, being patron, presi-dent or vice-president of numerous clubs, and creating a record for Queens-

land, if not for Australia, in that re-

spect.
