SHOT DEAD.

FORMER BRITISH CONSUL.

Pound at South Yarra.

Mr Henry English Fulford, who was a leading member of the British Consular Corps in China from 1880 to 1917, was found dead at his home in Walsh street, South Yarra, yesterday morning. His daughter went upstairs shortly after 8 o'clock and found her father lying on a couch with a Webley revolver grasped in his right hand. He had died fiom a bullet wound in the head, the bullet having entered through the roof of his mouth. The St Kilda road police took the body to the

morgue.

Born at Chepstow, Monmouthshire Eng-land in I859, Mr Fulfoedd was a son of the Rev. John Fulford of Adelaide and Melbourne. He was educated at the Mel-

bourne Grammar School, and then went to London to gain mercantile experience In 1880 he entered the British Consular service, and travelled extensively in Man-churia until 189O when he was appointed acting consul at Chung-king, for two years. The following e year he became acting Chinese secretary at Pekin, a position which he later occupied fiom 1898 to 19OO. From 1890 Mr Fulford was continuously engaged in the consular service. At dif-ferent times he was acting consul at Swatow and Suchow, vice-consul at Shang hal, consul at New-chwang, consul general at Mukden, acting consul-general at Tien- tsin on two occasions and at Shanghai and consul-general at Hankow in 1911 His last post was at Tientsin, where he was consul-general ii from 1912 to 1917. In that year he retired and came to live in Mel-

bourne.

Mr. Fulford's s wife, who was a daughter of a pastorallst in New South Wales died in I926. Ihere is only one child- a daugh_
