The field got well away. After going a furlong Wait-a-Bit' wefit out for the lead from Positano, Ayrshire, Bundook, Parthenopaeus, Dreamland, and Fleet Admiral, with True Blue last. Racing past the judge's box Parthenopaeus was out by himself, having a lead of four lengths from Bundook and Wait-a-Bit, then Fleet Admiral, Hypnotist, Merry Boy, The Grafter, Sortie, and Gaulus, with Coil and Fucile whipping in the field. Bundook took charge as they swept out of the straight, Koha and Wait-a-Bit being next, then Aurum, Fleet Admiral, Mischief, Parthenopaeus, and Manfred, with Fucile last. Coming to the back stretch Mischief sup.planted Bundook, whilst Dreamland moved into third place, Aurum still going nicely next, Manfred close handy, with Fleet Admiral and Wait-a-Bit, Parthenopaeus having dropped right out of it. Mischief led them a merry dance past the abattoirs, Bundook lying second, Dreamland, Aurum, Wait-a-bit, Manfred, Trent, The Chevalier, The Grafter, and Gaulus next. Round the home turn The Grafter was in advance, and he was first into the straight from Ayrshire, Bundook, Gaulus, Aurum, and Positano. Below the distance The Grafter held a clear lead of three lengths, Gaulus, however, coming up fast from the ruck, and Aurum and Bundook looked to have chances. The lad on The Grafter applied the whip to his mount at the half distance, but his stable companion Gaulus was fast gaining on him. A few yards from the post Gaulus drew up to The Grafter, and after an exciting rush, beat him on the post by half a head. Aurum secured third place four lengths behind The. Grafter, Bundook close up fourth, then Coil, Posltano, Clarion,, Battalion, Dreamland, Ariberite, Wait-a-Bit, and Trent, .the last four being Merry' Boy, True Blue, and Fleet Admiral, with Parthenopaeus, who broke down and walked in.
