Business Men's Association.

"FOLLOWING the death nearly two -1- years ago of Mr. A. J. Lea Holt, who for very many years was secretary of the Fremantle Business Men's Association, the work of the association lapsed for a few months, until the appointment, in November, 1935, of Mr. A. P. Hawkins as honorary secretary. With Mr. H. R. Hatch as president, Messrs. T. P. Bousfield and S. Dvoretsky as vice-presidents, and 14 other members of the committee, the association, which has an active membership of 62, has maintained a watchful eye on the welfare of the re-tail interests in Fremantle, and has been associated with several movements to their advantage. Monthly meetings are held in the office in the Fremantle Town Hall.

Considering that such a move would be against the interests of business people in Fremantle, the association successfully protested against the proposed extension of the bus service on the south side of the river, which at present ends at Petrastreet, East Fremantle, to Fremantle. It has agitated largely for the provision of

an automatice telephone exchange at Fre-mantle, and this has now been author-ised, although it is «ot yet known when it will be installed. It was to a large ex-tent responsible for the holding of the volunteer firemen's demonstrations at

Fremantle during Easter, as a result of which a good amount of money was brought into the city.

At the last meeting of the association a letter prepared by Mr. Dvoretsky was read, outlining a possible solution to the question of the disposal of the funds do-nated for youth employment in Western Australia. A sub-committee was formed to wait upon the trustees nf the fund at an early date, to bring the proposals be-fore their notice.
