NEW CANNING DAM ROAD.

Donation by Sir Charles McNess.

The Under-secretary of the Premier's Department (Mr. L. E. Shapcott) said on Tuesday that Sir Charles McNess had made a donation towards the cost of a roadway to connect the Canning dam and the Armadale-Brookton main road. The gift was in the form of Perth Road Board debentures of an approximate value of £7,385. The Government bad gratefully accepted it and the Premier

SIS CHARLES McNESS.

(Mr. J. C. Willcock), the Minister for Works (Mr. H. Millington) and the Direc-tor of Works (Mr. E. Tindale) had con-ferred on how soon the work could be begun. The road will be 16ft. wide and Will cost about £20,000.

Mr. Shapcott said that'the road would

ensure a fine drive over the whole route from Perth to the dam, serving also Ara-luen. The project originated a few months ago, when Sir Charles called on him and, after discussing means by which a donation could benefit the State and at the same time provide a maximum of employment, offered to find about one-third of the cost of the proposed road if the State found the balance. Sir Charles's permission would be sought to have the road named the Lady McNess

drive. ____________
