LATEST FROM AMERICA.

We take the following from the Melbourne Herald of the 8th instant :— ' We have New York papers to the 18th September, being five days later than our former dates,' A- moat disfrracefal

attempt had been made to interrupt the ' Grand Serenade' of Madame Sontag. A fierce mob collected in the house, the police interfered, received a few knocks for their pains, , the musicians were beset, their instruments broken in' pieces, and their music torn up. The wind-up was the postponement of the entertainment, the clearing of the house by the chief of police, the extinguishing of the lights, and the precipitate retirement of Madame Sontag. ' The subject of the New-York World's Fair had been brought before the Executive Committee of State Agricultural Society at Utica, and a Committee was appointed to confer with the New York Directors. ' 1 he fifth anniversary of the entrance of the American army into Mexico was celebrated with all the honours. 11 The Fourth of July yras celebrated with greit enthusiasm by tbe Saints in Great Salt Lake City. The orator of tbe day, Mr. Bullock, took strong ground in favour of the Constitution and the Union. ' The cholera was disappearing from the country. 'The crops of cotton, corn, and sugar were most abundant. ' The Woman's Rights Convention assembled at Syracuse on Wednesday, September 8. A fair representation of the citizens of Syracuse were present, and also a large number from all parts of the country. ' The elections, as might be expected, continued to be the chief topic of interest Several murders, and arrest of supposed murderers, are recorded. Some notices of the Australian Gol i-fields appear in the local journals.'

The Undertakers of the Adelaide City and Port Railway have appointed Mr. B. H. Babbage as Chief Engineer, with a salary of .£800 per annum, and an allowance of £100 per annum for travelling expenses.'. Mr. Babbage, by arrangements with the Undertakers, will continue to give a portion of his1 time to'the supervision of the Assay Office while that institution remains oj-en. Mr. Hiqginson, who has resigned his appointment in the Land Office, has been appointed Secretary to the Board, and it is rumoured that Mr. E. A. Hamilton of the Assay Office will obtain the appointment of Assistant Engineer. (
