LACROSSE.

Successful Gala at Subiaco.

On Saturday in pleasant weather and 'before a lur;re gathering of 'lacrosse' enthusiasts, the Weal (ru AiiElarlian Lacrosse Association held its third annual gula at the Subiaco Oval. In con-

junction with the gala, thc Amateur Athletic I ? Association conducted three interesting events |

over the 100 yards, 220 yards and one mile

course.

Although the afternoon's events commenced promptly at 2 o'clock, the gala was officially declared opened at 3 o'clock by the Mayor of Subiaco (Mr. H. L. Downe). After being in-troduced by thc patron (Bfr. A. McKenzie Clarke), the Mayor paid a tribute to all la cros-scut and the game for its fine reputation. Then all clubs, carrying premiership pennants, marched past the Mayor's stand and took up positions in front of thc main grandstand to witness the unfurling of the Canadian flag.

In a lengthy programme of lacrosse events, thc popular six-a-sidc matches, now more com-monly known as day box lacrosse, played a most prominent part. These matches consisting of two opposing teams of six men a-side provide sparkling lacrosse. Two halves of ten minutes duration were played at a furious pace, the style of game lending itself to displays of clever slick work, pace and understanding. Invariably tli^ ln-st tarlicians provo the supetlor

team. In the Anal of the District grade on Saturday, East Fremantle was opposed to Mt, Lawley for the third year in succession. On the previous two occasions Mt. Lawley beat East

Fremantle, two goals to one, but at half-time, it seemed that East Fremantle would secure its ¡ revenge, when by bright and crisp play, it led

by three goals to one. After the change, East : Fremantle seemed to tire and its stick work ] became very ragged. Mt Lawley, fighting

gamely and taking tull toll of East's unac- j countable lapse, pressed home the advantage,

drew level, and ran out an easy winner- over the ! closing stages by sis: goals to three. Mt. Lawley j

had to thank Len Berry for its wonderful re-1 covery. His cool judgment in attack gave his team a fine lead which was ably followed. Johnson, of East Fremantle, who "iud played a brilliant game throughout the earlier matches and particularly iu the first half of the final, did not receive sufficient support in the last half to enable him to bring about his uncanny shots to advantage. In the Junior "A" grade, Swan outclassed East Fremantle by nine gcals to two-while in the Junior "B" Grade. Ned-lands and Como fought a draw. In accordance with tlie rules of the day, the winner was de-cided by the toss of a coin and the toss favoured Nedlands.

The OOO yards relay race provided a much improved spectacle than previously. The course was one and a half times around the oval. Six players, 6paced at 110-yard intervals, formed a club team. Thc contestants, competing under lacrosse conditions, carried ball and crosse over their respective distances and they passed the ball over a 10 yards throw to their club mates. In a most interesting and spectacular race, A. Horner, of Midland Junction Club, was first home, closely followed by Hancock (Nedlands) and Jenkins (East Fremantle). The júnior championship race under lacrosse conditions also provided a good victory for Midland, the race being won by J. Stevenson.

Draffin (Mt. Lawley) and Byers (Nedlands) were the heat winners in the 440 yards race, in which contestants circled the oval once, carrying ball and crosse. In the final, Draffin in winning, gave a fine display and showed his skill and ability in drawing comfortably away from Byers over the last 75 yards.

An entirely new entry in the programme was the club efficiency parade. All clubs in charge of their marshalls paraded before the Mayor prior to the official opening, and, after the ceremony, carrying all premiership pennants, marched past the stand, to be judged for the most efficient club. Consideration in judg-ing was given to general conduct dur-ing the parade, muster of players present, uniform, appearance and marching. The parade of over 100 players and referees, presented a fine sight, but a difficult task for the judges. From an even field, Nedlands was declared first, Mt. Lawley second, and East Fremantle, third. The judging for this and other events was performed by the vice-president (Mr! F. C. Win-grove). The lack of entries for the fancy dress parade was disappointing. Tile only contestant J. Moyle, of Como, was, therefore, declared the

winner.

Throughout the afternoon, points were awarded to the clubs for < the various events, with the following result:-Mt. Lawley, 26; Nedlands, 21; East Fremantle, 17; Midland Junction, ll; Swan, 10; Como, 0; University, 5; Perth, S; Guildford, 2; North Perth, 2; Fremantle, nil.' This is the second occasion upon which Mt. Lawley has secured the title of champion club at the- annual- gaia.
