THE NANNUP RAILWAY.

Over 100 settlers from near and far gathered at Nannup to witness the open-ing by the Colonial Treasurer (Mr. Frank Wilson) of the Nannup Railway last week. As the train rushed by it broke, amid great cheering, a barrier of red and white ribbons, and then on the train coming to a standstill, the Colonial Treasurer, with Sir John Forrest and Mr. McLarty, mounted the engine to

formally declare the line open. A lunch-eon to the visitors was given by the Low-er Blackwood Farmers and Graziers' As-sociation, in the local hall, which was elaborately decorated. The president (Mr. James Kearney) presided. Mr. J. Savage, one of the speakers, predicted that the railway was not going to stop

at Nannup. Tho district was computed to have 9,000,000 loads of karri in the round and double that quantity of jar-rah, and there was yet to be opened up in the locality some of the best land in the State.

The Legislative Council of Natal last week adopted the draft constitution for the proposed Union of the South African colonies. The Bill providing for a refer-endum on the question of whether or not

the colony shall enter the Union was also passed. During the discussion of tho measures members stated that the Trans-vaal-Mozambique port and railway treaty was objectionable, but it was an improve-ment on the old state of affairs, and it would be enforced, whether Natal entered the Union or not.
