THE FIRST BARRACK STREET BRIDGE: DEMOLISHED IN 1894.

Few will deny that Perth need a better bridge to meet the requirements of the increased population. The second bridge was in course of erection at the time the photograph was taken, the con-tractor's office being shown on the right of the view. The building just across the bridge is still in existence, as is also the old gaol, which forms part of the present Museum. This build-ing is shown on the immediate left of the balconied building mentioned. Almost all the other houses in the view have been pulled down. The fence and stones in the foreground of the illustration represent the corner of Wellington and Barrack streets. The old bridge crossed the railway slightly to the west of the new structure.
