FREMANTLE HARBOUR

WORKS.

Over fifty further dismissals have tak-en place in connection with the Fremantle harbour works during the past few days. Owing to the approaching completion of the harbour and the decreased require-ments of stone, twenty men were paid off at the Darlington Quarry on Tuesday,

and on Wednesday thirty-two men, who have been engaged in facing the stone un-der and at the back of the north jetty also had their services dispensed with. Suffi-cient men are being retained on the latter work to give the finishing touches to it; while there are about forty-five men still employed at the Darlington Quarry.

With the object of hastening the com-mencement of the reclamation works on

the South Beach, a deputation, consisting of the Mayor of Fremantle (Mr. L. Alex-ander), the Mayor-elect (Cr. T. Smith), and Capt. Laurie, M.L.C., waited on the Minis-ter for Works (Mr. C. H. Rason, M.L.A.) on Nov. 21. In reply to their representa-tions, the Minister stated that the plans and specifications were expected to be com-pleted any day. The only thing that was

delaying the commencement of the work was the fact that some difference of opin-ion existed as to whether or not certain culverts should be put in by the Railway Department. He expected to be able to afford them some definite information in the course of a few days.
