THE NEW BARRACK-STREET

BRIDGE.

Judging by the progress being made with the erection of the temporary bridge over the railway at Barrack street, and a little, to the east of the present bridge, the new permanent structure should be commenced soon. In the construction of the temporary bridge, economy is being carefully stud-

ied, although due regard is being paid to efficiency. It will be 33ft. wide, with a footpath 8ft. wide on the west side. The plan for the new bridge provides for a combination of the straight and skew bridges, the portion from Welling-ton-street to about half-way across be-

ing straight. From this point it is tak-. en to the left on the skew, to Beaufort street, and on the right fan-shaped, giv-ing an easy approach towards Stirling street. The new bridge will be 66ft.

wide, measured between the balustrad-ing, and will be in true alignment with

and of the same width as Barrack-street. The width of the roadway will, be 46ft., as against 25ft. on the pre-sent bridge. The structure will be of an attractive appearance, and will be an ornament to the city the style being a free treatment of Renaissance. The work, which is estimated to cost' £18,000. will be carried out by Mr. W. Dartnall. M.I.C.E., Chief Engineer of Existing Lines, and will, it is anticipat-ed, be completed before the close of the present year.
