THE Proprietor of VICTORIA HOUSE, con« lera this a suitable Örtfefor

tendering his warmest thanks to his friends and numerous customers for the very libjtrgpsup-port he has received during the past six years, but more especially for the unexampled prosperity which has attended Viotoria House since its erection at the commencement of last year.

Contrary to the usual custom, it has been the proprietor's aim to keep nothing hut GOODS of a MRsT RATK QUALITY, which will sufficiently explain and answer a question very fieqitently asked, «hy there is such a marked differeneo between the goods at t\n establishment and the old and tiashy Stock kept by too many of our colonial Storekeepers ?

John Markwell is proud to say that this aim has been duly and abundantly appreciated, and it is to this (combined with small profits) that Victoria House owes the, envùble position she now en-

joys, viz.-possess«»« the largest trade in the Northern . ¡stricta. *] X

J. M. need scarcely sav it shall still be his constant aim to sústiuníhis pro-eminence, and to render the year 1856 as prosperous as its predecessor.

There is now on view, at Victoria House, tbe largest stock of Drapery Goods in the Distriot, and all well selected, of first rate quality, and perfectly New ; continually augmented by periodical

To all Members of the^Cfuited Church of

England and Ireland, residing io or near

Brisbane.

MY CHRISTIAN FRIENDS,-As there are^

numbers of inhabitants of this town and neighbourhood who are baptized members* of tbo United Church of England and Ireland, yet can-not enjoy tho Ordinances and Spiritual privileges of their religion for want of sufficient Church accommodation, your Minister respectfully, but, earnestly, iuvites'y our attendance at a MEETING to be held at our School Room, on MONDAY EVENING. The doors will be open at 6 o'clock, and the Church bell will ring from a quarter past

six till halt-past, when business will begin. , >

Tho main objects of the Meeting aro to lay ] beforo you, and obtain your opinions concerning,

some plans'for making our Church inoro useful 'ti and practical. And since it is beyond one man's '

power to do this « ithout the constant good-« ill

and assistance of the laity-a Committee will be t

formed, by which e\ery class of society will bo '

represented; and this committee will be oom- j|' posed of both sexes. The duties of tho gentlemen fa~ will be to elect their own officers, to cull meetings, ' j

and to consult for the benefit of our religion, &o. ¡j The Indios will receive cards, and undertake to do "r '* their utmost in obtaining subscriptions for in- ,, ¡ cieasingthe number of sittings in church, and J maintaining a second clergyman, &o. rJ

Our communion has, 1 fear, hitherto failed to r act together as heartily and unanimously as we 'J\ have a right to expect from Christian brethren, -j

whose duty it is to "Consider one another to,.^,,Jl provoke tinto love and to good works." We have ¡j, incurred the charge, I fear deservedly, of baili!*

too exclusively the church' of the rich. Tho be- i ginning of the year is a fitting tiine to endeavour /

to retrieve our'character, and show tho world we' !L are in earnest. It is hoped that all classes of our \< Communion will embrace >this opportunity of ii meeting their Ministor, who now so anxiously I invites their co-operation and sympathy.

1 remain, my Christian friends, 1 Your faithful Minister and brother,
