ENGLAND V. AUSTRALIA

AUSTRALIAN VICTORY, 13 POINTS TO 3

SYDNEY, June 24.

The first football match, England v. Aus-

tralia, was played on the Sydney Cricket Ground this afternoon in perfect weather. At the beginning of the match nearly 30,000 people were present. Several alterations were made in the English team. Martelli took Thompson's place as full-back, and, Bucher and Adamson supplanted Nicholson and Timms as three-quarters, while Cookson took Adamson's place among the half-backs. There were no alterations in the Australian, team. Mr. Garrard, of New Zealand, acted as referee. Row captained the Australians.

England won the toss, and Gralton kicked off, the kick being returned by Doran to near the centre, where Muïlîneux kicked out. A free was awarded to England, and Nicholls kicked to within five yards of the goal line. Davis carried it into touch. From the throw-in England marked. Martelli failed to kick the goal, and the Aus- tralians forced. From the kick-out Derna marked. From a scrum Gralton secured and passed to Ward, who kicked into touch in England's 25. From a scrum Gralton ¿pause-T to Ward, and the kutter to Evans, whctf failed to take the pass. From close scrunt^1 work near the line Maitelii picked up and kicked to the centre. From a scrum Gralton secured and passed to Ward, to Evans. the last named being tackled by Cookson. Martelli kicked to the centre. From another scrum Mullineux secured, and passed to Cookson, to Nicholls, who kicked in touch at centre. Gralton secured from a scrum, and passed to Ward, to Evans, to White, who missed, the ball going into touch. Cookson secured from the scrum, and passed to Nicholls, who with a splendid dodging run transferred the play to the centre. Ward secured from the scrum, and passed to Evans, who mulled. Cookson se-cured, and transferred the play to within five yards of the Australian goal. Mull-neux, from the scrum, passeed to Cookson to Bucher, to Nicholls, to Doran, but Spragg tackling splendidly, stopped _« rush. From! a scrum Gralton secured, and passed tx» Ward, who kicked to the centre, where' Evans secured. Cookson, however, follow-ing up, forced him into touch. A free wag hero awarded to (England. Bücher kicked to tho centre, where T.ard se-cured and kicked into touch. Front a scrum Gralton secured and passed! to Ward, to Evans, who was tackled. An-other scrum waa formed. Gralton secured and passed to Ward, to Evans, to Ward again, the last named missing. From a scrum in front of England's goal Gralton se-cured and passed to Evans, who kicked for goal, missing. Kelly followed on and se-cured a try amid great enthusiasm. Spragg failed to kick the goal, however.

From the drop out Ward secured and kick-ed into touch near tho centre. From a scrum the ball was kicked into touch by Tanner within England's 20. A free to England and Nicholls kicked into touch at centre. A free to Australia was taken by Ward, who kicked to Nicholls, who returned to centre. From a scrum Kelly secured and kicked to Bucher, the ball being carried into touch. A free was awarded to England for off-side. Nicholls kicked to Australia's 25. Spragg returned to Martelli, and Bucher, in taking the kick, mulled, the ball going into touch. From a series of scrums, Mullineux secured and passed to Cookson, to Nicholls, who kicked to centre. Ward then secured and kicked into touch. Another scrum was formed, from which Gralton secured and passed to Ward, to Evans, to Kelly, who mulled near the line. England forced. Im-mediately after the drop out a free was awarded to England. Gray kicked to Ward, who returned into touch at 25. The whistle sounded half-time, with the score unaltered.

The play during the first half was not up to that of the previous Saturday, each side apparently exercising too much caution.

In the second-half Stout kicked off. The ball was returned by Ward into touch. From the throw-in Ward marked and kicked into touch at the centre. A pass-ing forward rush by England was well stopped by M'Cowan at 25. From a scrum. Gralton secured, and kicked to Bucher, who returned into touch. White secured from, the next scrum, and, fending two opponents off, kicked into touch at the centre. Some loose play ensued. Evans picked up, and kicked to the England 25. Martelli mulled. A free to England relieved the visitors. From a scrum Gralton passed to Evans, who passed badly, and England, securing, kicked into touch. Both sides now warm-ed up to the game. From the throw-in Marks marked, and kicked into touch near the England 25. Doran secured from the scrum, and kicked into touch. From a scrum Mullineux secured, and passed to Cookson, to Francomb, to Doran, to Nicholls, to Adamson, who crossed over, securing the first try for England. The passing was a splendid bit of play, each, pass being taken cleanly, and was loudly ap-plauded. Martelli failed to kick a goal making the score three points each.

A scrum was formed from the kick-off, from which Gralton secured, and passed to Ward, to Evans, who transferred the play to the England 25, and was there tackled. Loose play followed. England was awarded a free kick, but Martelli failed to score. A splendid for-ward rush by Australia with the ball at the toe carried the play to within the England 25, the ball going into touch. From a scrum Gralton secured and passed to Ward, but Bucher, intercepting splendidly, carried the play into touch in Australia's 25. A free kick allowed England for off-side play was taken by Martelli, who failed to score. Row was forced from the drop out, and loose scrum work took place. Cookson picked up and passed to Nicholls, who transferred backto Cookson, the latter mulling. The ball went into touch. From the throw-in White marked and kicked to Bucher, the latter also marking. The ball was returned to Carey, who mulled. A forward rush by England was well stopped by Evans, who kicked to Martelli. The latter carried the ball into touch close to England's goal-line. From the throw-in Gray secured and kicked into the centre, when Carson got hold of it and passed nicely to Davis, who carried the ball to England's 25. Here Adamson tackled, secured, and kicked into touch at centre. From a scrum Gralton got possession, and passed to Ward, to White, to Evans, the last named mulling, and the ball going Into touch. A series of scrums were formed in rapid succession in England's 25. From one of these Gralton secured and passed to Ward, to Spragg, who crossed over and scored. He also added the extra points.

Scores : Australia, 8 ; England, 3.

The passing was beautifully done, and met with due appreciation.

From the kick-off a rush by the Australian forwards took the play within England's 25, where from a scrum Gralton secured and passed to Ward, to Spragg, to Evans, who dodging through splendidly, scored between the posts. Spragg again added the extra

points. The whistle then sounded, the score standing :-Australia, 13 ; England, 3.

The result of the game was most popular, the great crowd cheering again and again.
