GENERAL RAINFALL.

A general rainfall has taken place over the colony, and, while benefiting the pastures and crops, it will also give an impetus to mining on the fields, where operations have been suspended for some time. Over an inch of rain was recorded in the Valley of the Darling, an inch and a-quarter on the Lachlan, nearly an inch on the Murrumbidgee, three-quarters of an inch on the Upper and Lower Murray, and 68 points in

the extreme North-west.

THE ENGLISH FOOTBALL TEAM.

The English football team to play in the match to-morrow will probably have to be altered, as Nicholls is thought to have caught influenza, and Nicholson hurt his foot yesterday, while Mullineux is suffering from a severe cold.

SALE OF A STATION.

The Hon. G. H. Cox's Pine Ridge station, near Coolah, with 37,000 sheep and 500 cattle, has been sold for £40,750 to Mr.

J. A. Buckland.

CHARGE OF LIBEL.

At the Water Police Court to-day, Gilbert Probyn Smith, described as a journalist, was committed for trial on the charge of libelling John Norton, editor of " Truth," in a pamphlet recently issued, and which is said to have been extensively circulated in the Northumberland electorate during the recent election.
