MR. J. H. EDGAR DEAD

Visitor to Tibetan Monasteries

News has been received in Brisbane of the death of Mr. James Huston Edgar, F.R.G.S., F.R.A.I., of the China Inland Mission. About 10 years ago

Mr. Edgar spent several weeks in Bris-bane and Ipswich, lecturing on his travels in Tibet and other countries. A fondness for travel showed itself early in Mr. Edgar's career, and his family became accustomed to his long absences from home when he was formally adopted by the Maoris. At the age of 14 he went into the world to fend for himself and de-veloped a powerful physique as he roughed it in farm and bush life. In 1898 he went to China, and after some experience at other stations he made Tatsienlu, at the entrance to Tibet, his headquarters. From there he made long journeys on foot, visiting hundreds of Tibetan monasteries for the distribution of Chinese literature He leaves a widow, three sons in South Australia, and a daughter who is en-gaged in missionary work in Korea.
