On May 25, 1768, — James Cook re-ceived his commission as Lieutenant to command the Endeavour during her voyage to the South Seas for ob-

servations and discoveries. Lieutenant John Oxley, explorer and administrator, who discovered the Brisbane River and established the first settlement on that river, died in Sydney on May 25, 1828. Born on this day were A. Kippax (1897), the Australian cricketer at present in England with the Test team; Lord Lytton (1803), the noted English novelist; Tom. Bayers (1826), the English pugilist; Gene Tunney (1898), the American boxer: Ralph W. Emerson (1803), the American essay-ist; and John Tebbett (1834), born at Windsor, New South Wales, a noted astronomer. Warwick was proclaimed a municipality on May 25, 1861; on the same day in 1867 Roma was proclaimed a municipality. Eight persons and 6000 sheep were drowned in a flood at Cecil Plains on the Darling Downs on May 25, 1873.
