THE FAIRFIELD DEVIATION.

PROGRESS OF THE WORK.

The work now in progress at Fairfield is a deviation from the South Coast railway, leaving the present line at the Boggo-road overbridge, or two miles nine chains from Melbourne-street Station, and rejoining it close to Yeronga Station. Between Yeronga and Yeerongpilly the line will be straightened out and the grades reduced. It is also intended to duplicate the line between Boggo-road and Yeerongpilly, so that there will be a continuous double road from Mel-bourne-street to the lastmentioned sta-tion. It will be remembered that during the floods of 1893 great inconvenience and delay to traffic was caused by so much of the existing railway being sub-merged, and it was then determined to remove the line above flood level, and at the same time to construct one with easy curves and grades, suitable to the heavy coal trains running over this sec-tion. Authority for this work was ap-proved by the House last session. Ten-ders were called for in April last, Messrs. Kirk Bros. and Frew being the success-ful competitors, and operations were com-menced about the middle of June. A large amount of work has since boen accomplished, and satisfactory progress made. All the cuttings have been opened out, and a great quantity of material removed to form embankments. The concrete culverts, five in number, are well in hand, and two of them are prac-tically completed. The piles for a bridge over Flemming-street have been driven, and a 5ft by 2ft. 8in. box drain under the line, as well as the diversion of Lang street, has been put in. The fencing is being pushed on, and there is every prospect of the work being finished well within contract time. _______________________________

As announced in our advertising columns, the second of the series of popu-lar organ recitals and concerts in con-nection with the Valley Wesleyan Church will be held this evening. A very attractive programme of instru-mental and vocal music has been pro-vided, including a violin solo by Herr Rosendorff and. a clarionet solo by Mr. Case. Mr. Benson will preside at the

organ.

Apart from novels, no book recently published is enjoying such a remarkably large sale as Kldd's "Social Evolution."
