DEATH OF DR. H. GILBERT

Valued Hospital Worker

The death occurred sud- denly at his home in LeFevre terrace, North Adelaide, on Saturday morning of Dr. Henry

Gilbert, president and life gov-ernor of the Adelaide Children's Hospital, with which he had been associated for more than 40 years. He was 67.

Born at Williamstown in 1880, Dr. Gilbert was educated at St. Peter's College, and later entered the University of Adelaide as a medical student. He received the degree of medicine at the Melbourne University and con- tinued tinued his studies in Eng land where be became a Fellow of the Royal College or Sur-geons. Returning to Adelaide in 1907. Dr. Gilbert joined the hon-orary medical staff of the Adelaide Children's Hospital. He was appointed president of the board in 1934 and a life governorship of the hospital was conferred on him two years later. He served In World War I. as a captain in the Australian Army Medical corps.

Dr. Gilbert was actively associated with St. Mark's College and had been a member of the board since its inception in 1925. In a tribute to Dr. Gilbert, the Minister of Health (Mr. McEwin) praised his untiring efforts, parti-cularly in relation to the progress or the Children's Hospital. Mr. McEwin said be was particularly impressed by Dr. Gilbert's en-thusiasm and strained efforts on behalf of the institution. Mr. Dudley Turner, who was a member of the board and treasurer of the hospital for many years, described Dr. Gilbert as one of the State's most public spirited men. The State could ill afford the loss of a man like Dr. Gilbert, and he would be mourned by a host of friends and associates, who had the greatest admiration for his unselfish devotion to the humani-tarian work he so willingly undertook. Dr Gilbert retired from the honorary staff of the hospital be-fore the war. but returned to take the place of the younger men who had joined the services, said Mr. Turner. Dr. Gilbert is survived by a widow, three sons and a daughter.
