THE SENATE

MR. DALY OPPOSITION LEADER Mr. Dooley Deputy Melbourne, June 25.

Representatives of the Labor Party in the Senate met to-day to elect a new

leader to succeed Senator Needham, and as was expected, they chose Sena- <*>

tor Daly. Senator Dooley was elected Deputy Leader. In addition to Senator Daly and Senator Dooley, there are only five other members of the Labor Party in the Senate. Senator Daly, who is 38 years of age, is one of the representatives of South Australia. He was elected to the Senate at the general election in November, and this is his first experience in Parliamentary life. Since Senator Needham severed his association with the Federal Parliament on account of ill health, in March, Senator Daly has been deputy leader. He is a lawyer, and is a member of the legal firm of Messrs. Denny and Daly, Adelaide. For some years Senator Daly has been one of the leaders of the Labor movement of Australia, and he has had considerable experience in industrial matters. Appreciation was expressed of the services of Senator Keedham to the Labor movement, and regret at his defeat at the last election and his hastened retirement from Parliamentary activities through ill health.

Senator J. J. Daly.
