NEW SUPREME COURT JUDGE

Mr. E. E. Cleland, K.C., Appointed

Mr. E.E. Cleland, K.C., was ap-<*> pointed a Judge of the Supreme Court in place of the late Mr. Justice Piper, by Executive Council yesterday. Mr.

Cleland attended the Executive Council immediately the Order-in-Council was made, and took the oath as a Judge of the Supreme Court and the oath of allegiance to tbe King. The Attorney-General (Mr. Jeffries* said that the appointment of Mr. Cleland as judge would nave the approval of aU members of the legal profession, and the community had the greatest confidence in bis ability. Mr. Cleland had been briefed in a large number of important cases, and had had wide experience in all branches of the law. He would bring to the Bench a profound knowledge of the law and of men and affairs. He had a judicial temperament, and would uphold the high traditions for which the South Australian judiciary was noted. The president of the Law Society, Mr. G. C. Ligertwood. X.C.. said he was sure that all the members of the society would be pleased with the appointment of Mr. Clelarid. For many years he had been recognised as the leader of the Bar and had always been very popular with his fellow practitioners. His h-igrh legal attainments were well known to the public. Mr. F. Villeneuve Smith. K.C., now the senior Kine"s Counsel in this State in practice, said that Mr. Cleland would brinsr to the Bench not only a wealth of learning, acuity of judgment and wide experience, but also the deeD respect and regard of the w*>ole profession, which wcu"d rejoice that he had found It Trossible to accept a position on the Bench, whers his eminent services xrcrald bo available to the country in spite of the sacrifices toe would make by accepting it.
