LOOTON, August 3.

The bill providing for an inoreaaed grant to the Prince of Wales of £36,000 per annum was passed through committee in the House of Commons to-day without amendment.

'.A NEW GUINEA SYNDICATE.

LONDON-, August 3.

A syndicate, the object of which is to explore and acquire land in New Guinea, has been registered with a capital of £20,000. The first subscribers are Lord Richard Browne (son of tho Marquis of Sligo), Lord Gifford, Alderman Joseph Renais (London), and Mr. T. 0. Kerry, the explorer.

FIGHTING IN EGYPT.

LONDON, August 3.

News has been received from Egypt of a sovere engagement between the Egyptian troops undor General Grenfell, Sirdar of the Egyptian anny, and the Dervishes, at Toski, on the Nile, Borne distnnoo north of Wady Haifa. General Grenfell's troops attacked tho Dervish army, which, after desperate fighting, was completely routed, the Dervish ohief, tho principal emirs, and 1500 men being killed. General Grenfell lost only fifty men.

LONDON-, August 4.

Later ne wa of the engagement between G eneral Grenfell's troops and the Dervishes shows that at 5 o'olook in the morning he found that the Dervishes were preparing for an advanoe. Ho thereupon mado a feint of withdrawing, and when four miles from Toslá he Btopped and charged the enemy with his cavalry on the right and infanty on the loft. Tho Dervishes, who fought desperately and charged ropoatodly, were driven from hill to hill. While the Egyptian cavalry was attaoking the Dervish army on the right tho Dorvish chief waa killed, and after seven hours' fighting tho enemy fled, leaving the chief, twelve emira, and 1500 mon killed. Tho Egyptian cavalry and a gunboat pursued tho fugitives for miloa, and the baggage of the Dorvish army und fifty standards were captured.

Tho Standard, in an artiole published to-day, states that the present firmness of the oopper market is partly duo to persistent statements that tho French copper syndicate has been patohed up on a now baais, and the Tharsis Company (North Amerioa) is clearly outside the ring if it exports any oopper.
