MELBOURNE, Monday.

Mr Smyth, Crown Solicitor, appeared this morning at the Police Court for the purpose of asking for a formal re-mand of Ned Kelly, the bushranger, charged with a series of murders and other outrages. The prisoner, owing to wounds received at Glenrowan, was unable to attend, and several remands will be necessary before the case can be gone into. The principal charge is the murder of sergeant Kennedy, Con-table Scanlan and Lonigan, the various bank robberies, the murder of Sherritt, and resistance to the police at Glen-rowan, together with a long catalogue of minor- charged. The indictment is more formidable than any yet brought against any criminal in ibis colony. It was proposed to assign a counsel to aato conduct the defence, but Kelly's friends declined the offer. The magis- trater, in a brief statement, consented to to the remand. The feeling is becoming general that the police are greatly to blame in con- nection with the attack upon Jones s hotel at Glenrowan, and it is expected that the Government will appoint a Royal Commission to institute an en-quiry into the whole affair, together with the general organisation of the force. A communication has been forwarded from New South Wales, for the purpose of arranging the appointment of a board to distribute the reward offered for the capture of the Kelly gang.
