Dan Kelly and Hart Killed. Five other Deaths. Ned Kelly Recovering. MELBOURNE, Monday Night.

It is difficult to give a consecutive account of the proceedings over the capture of the Kellys, the telegrams received being so fragmentary. It seems that after shooting Sherritt, near Beechworth, the outlaws rode in the direction of Glenrowan, situated on the north-west of Greta. They arrived there on Sunday afternoon, and at once commenced to stick up the township. The local police were helpless for a time, and many of the inhabitants sought refuge in the bush, while others were driven into Jones's Hotel, a bluestone building. During the night, Constable Bracken escaped from the hotel, and made for the railway station. Observing a special train approaching, he signalled, and on the train pulling up he informed the occupants of the doings of the Kellys, and asked assist-ance. Hare and several constables got out and made for the hotel, which they found in full possession of the outlaws. The firing then commenced. Ned Kelly was seen at the rear of the hotel amongst the timber, and was fired on. Sergeant Steel shot him mortally, and on being picked up and brought in, he was found to be covered with armour under his clothes, The people in the hotel made their es-cape, and stated that Byrne was shot dead inside. Jones, the landlord, was also shot dead, together with a line re-pairer and two children. Cannon, in company with the Permanent Artillery was sent up by a special train at two o'clock, and the beseiging party finally decided to burn down the hotel. For this purpose a heavy fire was kept up for some minutes to cover their design. Constable Johnston, advanced on the building, and set fire to several weatherboard buildings on the north-ern side. It then became known that Martin Cherry, an innocent man, was inside the building. The flames rapidly caught hold, and amidst the fire, a priest named Father Gibney, electri-fied the spectators by advancing to the building, which he penetrated to save Cherry. Mrs. Skilling and Kate Kelly appeared on the scene at this juncture, and the former endeavored to make her way to her brother, declar-ing she would rather see them burned than shot by the police. The priest on entering the building found Dan Kelly, Hart and Byrne lying dead, having been shot. Cherry was carried out alive but died soon after. In a short time the whole place was consumed. A telegram at 4 o'clock states that Ned Kelly is still very weak, but Dr Nicholson and other gentlemen who saw him, state he will survive, Ned Kelly, with the remains of Byrne and Cherry, will be taken to Benalla to-night. Never was such excitement wit-nessed in Melbourne. Throughout the day the "Age" and "Argus" published special editions containing the latest particulars, and their offices were be-sieged with people. Immense crowds congregated discussing the affair. It is expected that Ned Kelly will be sent down to the Melbourne Gaol.
