THE Q.S.S. COMPANY'S NEW STEAMER

WARREGO

The Queensland Steam Shipping Company's new steel steamer Warrego, from Glasgow, via ports, with immigrants and a general cargo, came up the river by yesterday morning's tide, and anchored in the stream opposite the Botanical Gardens. The Francis Cadell went alongside shortly afterwards, transhipped the immigrants, of whom there were 232, comprising 29 married couples, 46 single men, 62 single women, and 66 children, and landed them at the depot. The new-

comers will be open for engagement at 9 o' clock this morning.

The Warrego is a smart and powerful looking vessel, measuring 250ft. long by 36.25ft. beam, and having a depth of hold of 22. 85ft. This gives her a gross measurement of 1551.87 tons and a net register tonnage of 987. 37 tons She has two decks, and is schooner-rigged. The Warrego was built specially for the Queensland trade, bv Messrs W. Doxford and Son, of Sunderland, and is certainly a most valuable addition to the company's fast increasing fleet. She is in every way suited for trade, and more especially for passenger traffic in a tropical climate. It is to be hoped she will have a long and profitable career in the Queensland trade.

She is supplied with machinery of the most modern design, manufactured and fitted by the builders. The engine room, which is amid-ships, is a neat and compact compartment 51. 8ft in length. The engines are of the compound surface-condensing type, having two cylinders 35 in. and 70 in. respectively in diameter. The engines are of 250 horse power nominal and l960 effective, and drive the vessel at an average rate of thirteen knots per hour on a daily con sumption of about thirty-two tons of fuel. The Warrego carries six boats. She carries a large quantity of cargo on a comparatively light draught of water.

A great deal of pains and expense has been devoted to the passenger accommodation, which is of a highly superior character. There are 80 first class berths, and 70 second-class, while 50 passengers can be accommodated in the steerage. The internal fittings are exceedingly beautiful, the walls of the saloon being pannelled with polished marble, bearing the Queensland coat of arms, and handsomely finished off with gilt beadings. It is impossible at present to give a just idea of the completeness of the internal arrangements owing to the immigrant fittings. The dining saloon is entirely apart from the sleeping berths and is exceedingly lofty. It is entered by a Iarge companion-way, at the top of which is a spacious social hall, furnished in the latest style and supplied with a piano There is an elegantly-fitted smoking room on deck, panelled

with marble.

The Warrego left Greenock on the 5th Sep tember; arrived at Malta on the 13th, Port Said on the 17th, Suez on the 20th, Colombo on the 4th October, Thursday Island on the 20th, Cooktown on the 23rd, Townsville on the 24th, Bowen on the 25th, Mackay on the 26th, Rock hampton on the 27th, and anchored in the Biisbane roadstead on Monday afternoon. She berthed at the Municipal Wharves last evening, and as she has only 200 tons of general cargo, it is expected she will finish discharging this evening. She will be docked for overhaul most likely to-morrow or Friday, and, after coming out of dock, will be thrown open for inspection by the public
