A CONTRAST IN FORWARD WORK

East Perth Defeats Sabiaco.

Outplayed in the first half, but not forced to make an uphill fight later through Subiaco's atrocious kicking for goal and deplorable forward work, East Perth in

troduced its best system and speed into the play, demoralised its opponents, and won by 22 points at Perth Oval. Disappointment but not surprise was caused by the match. In perfect weather and on a big ground excellent football should have been played, but it was not to be, except in spasms. Throughout the season Subiaeo has marred its otherwise good efforts by the lack of reasonably alert and accurate forwards and when its lead at half-time was only four points East Perth was giveu a great chance of winning with a typically sudden and brilliant transformation of form. East Perth was beaten across the centre, but its ruck and forwards showed such improvement in the second half that it dominated the play. Subiaco's forwards were sadly at fault in the first half and the defence fell to pieces when East Perth made its rally. A pleasing feature of the play was the performance of the carnival rover, H. Screaigh. who kicked niue goate. The terms were: — EAST PERTH. — Backs: Milbanke, Glew, M. Ryan. Half-backs: Bennett, lawn. PelL Centres: Lalor, Booth. Guhl. Half-forwards: Clune. Cronin, Dempster. Forwards: Little, Loekyer. Garnaut. Ruck: B. Ryan, Saiiguinetti, Screaigh (rover). Xineteenth man: Miller (replaced Garnaut in the second quarter). SUBIACO. — Backs: Briggs. Grigg, McCallum. Half-backs: Ahearn, Bact, Richardson. Centres: Mackay. Struck. J. Edmundson. Half-forwards: Dairies. Daib\ Merson. Forwards: Toll. Bancroft, Xissen. Ruck: Gilbert. Green. Smith (rover). Nineteenth man: Nelson (replaced Bant at threequarter time).Umpire. Umpire. — F. Collins. The football was of a mediocie standard at the start, but it improved considerably as the quarter wore on. Subiaco's centreline was making many opportunities for the forwards, who, however, failed miserably. Screaigh scored the first goal, using his clever turn and unerring aim to advantage. Three points to Subiaeo preceded another East Perth goal and a fine passage of play from end to end — Grigg to Merson to Ahearn — gave Subiaeo a goal. East Perth was profiting by waiting down for the ball, but for the most part Subiaeo was nippier. Screaigh kicked his third goal and Nissen .scored two for Subiaeo. making the quarter time scores: — Subiaeo. 4.7: East Perth, 3.4. Players on both sides were apt to overdo short-passiug. Subiaeo was the superior side and East Perth had few chances of scoring, yet the latter actually scored more than Subiaeo. Against slowthinking and slow-moving forwards. East Perth's backs, chiefly Lawn and M. Ryan, were doing well, but the pressure was very strong. Seven behinds were scored in succession, including two postern. Then Screaigh snapped a goal for East Perth, which added 2.2 before Subiaeo 'scored a goal. Two more behinds save Subiaeo a lead of 5.16 to 6.6 at half-time. Daily, whose kicking for goal had been

wretched, was transferred from centrehalf forward to the half-back line. Subiaco's defence withstood many attacks and Smith lan through nicely to kick its sixth coal. Then Grigg made one of his few mistake; and presented Lockyer with a goal. Poor kicking persisted until East Perth swung into fast., systematic play and overwhelmed Subiaeo, to add five goals. In contrast to the tactics at the other end. East Perth's forwards were away from their men and opened out well. In the ruck, too. East Perth held sway, though it must be said that Subiaeo missed Bant there badly. At the bell East Perth led by 12.10 to 6.17. Hopes of a close finish were revived when Subiaeo scored goals from Mereon

and Bancroft anti was only 13 points in arrears. With Cronin in the centre, its ruck. Little, Ryan and Screaigh. in form and its forwards keeping loose. East Perth, however, went ahead easily. Though Subiaco- scored two goals towards the finish, East Perth had a commanding lead and the final scores were: — EAST PERTH .... 16.12 (108 pts.). SUBIACO ? H.20 (86 pts.). Goal-kick; is:— East Perth: Screaigh (9). Loekyer (4). B. Ryan. Clune and Dempster.' Subiaeo: Xissen (4), Bancroft (21. Daily. Smith, Merson. Gilbert and Ahearn. Screaigh was the outstanding player on the ground. His speed, elusiveuess and uncanny accuracy in kicking for goal were admirable, especially from scrums near the posts. Lawn was very solid at lalf-back and Cronin distinguished himself in attack and in the centre Sanguinetti was good in the ruck and defence. Bennett, D.nipster. a good position player. Little. M. and B. Ryan, and Glew were the best of the others. Subiaco had a good pair in Gilbert and Strack. The former battled hard in the ruck throughout, and the latter played exceptionally well in his new position at the pivot. In Booth and Cronin (last quarter) he had two capable opponents. Smith ro\red for over three quarters and did well. Mackay and the speedy newcomer. Edmondson. won on the wing, and Richardson was good at half-back. Grigg and Green were the best of the others.
