EAST FREMANTLE EXTENDED.

Swan Districts' Tine Recovery.

Strong, gusts of wind, intermittent showers and sloppy . cricket pitches marred an interesting game of . football o'n Saturv dav afternoon at Bassendean Oval between

East Fremantle' and Swan -Districts, from which the former team emerged a comfortable winner.. During the first', half, East Fremantle completely outplayed its opponents, who were unable to adapt themselves to the adverse 'conditions^Eait Fremantle's disposal, and' handling of the greasy ball was so sure, '.arid' its . lead - of nine goals to one after two 'quarters; so considerable, that interest had apparently; faded from the game. In the second, half, however, Swan Districts, a hopelessly, beaten team, staged a fine, rally, and after a brilliant third quarter in which it scored six. goals to -three, reduced East .?? Fremantle's lead in the final term to four goals. Swan Districts' recovery was. due m large measure to the fine forward play of Cook, the determination and rugged, play of a powerful ruck and a strong centreline which repeatedly drove- the ^ball forward. Though temporarily demoralised by Swan Districts' burst in the third: term, East Fremantle was always steady, and always - appeared a certain winner. 'The teams were: — EAST FREMANTLE. — Backs: Woods, N. Doig, F. Mann. Half-i»ck»: O. James, . Janrie, Munro. Centres: E. Dolg, Taylor, Migro. Half: forwards: Butcher, Fordham, Martienson. Forwards: Snell, G. Doig, Reynolds. Followers: G. Mann, Prosser, McGlinn. .'Nineteenth/man: Enright (did not play). SWAN DISTRICTS. — Backs: Penberthy, Reilly, Millwood. Half-backs:~ Clarke, Buckley, Zilko. Centres: Mosey, Grieve, Brownhall. Halfforwards: Ford, Parks, Bee. Forwards: Cook, Gorn, Burge. Followers: Mclnerney,- Sweetapple, Daly. Nineteenth man: Helmrich (did not play). .... CENTRAL UMPIRE. — C. Cook. ; East Fremantle missed several scoring opportunities at the .commencement .ot play, but a move started .by Jaryis ended in a snap-shot goal by G. ? Doig. '. Daly scored a point for Swan. Districts, but Taylor's low pass to G. -Doig, led. to another goal from the latter. ? Swan Districts were playing fairly well at this stage, Grieve being outstanding . at ' the centre. East Fremantle, which was mostly in attack, was well served by Jarvis, G. Doig (who marked surely) and Fordham at centre half-forward, who picked the ball up deftly at the end of the quarter to score East Fremantle's third goal, giving it a lead of 3.1 to 0.1. Fordham continued to dominate the play in the second term, his marking of the wet ball being brilliaiit. Snell snapped East Fremantle's fourth goal from an easy position, and then play was transferred. Bee sending the ball to Cook who posted. Swan Districts' first goal. In spite of excellent defence work by Buckley- and Reilly, however, East Fremantle: then took command until the end of the quarter and five goals followed in quick succession from G. Doig (3), Reynolds and Snell. At half-time East Fremantle led by 9.4 to 1.2. . .-...-Swan Districts attacked in the third quarter, a concerted move between Daly and Cook ending with an excellent goal. When East Fremantle transferred the play, however, it went further ahead with a point and three easy goals, and a hollow victory appeared probable. Although 10 coals in arrears and despite the sweeping rain, Swan Districts then unfolded the most dashing and vigorous football of the match. In a great burst, Cook (2), Bee, Gorn and Forbes goaled within a few minutes, East Fremantle players scarcely, touching the ball. At three-quarter time, East Fremantle led by 12:5 to 7.5. With the assistance of the wind East Fremantle drove the ball forward at the start of play in the fourth quarter, but only four successive points ' resulted. G. Doig, however, consolidated, his team's advantage with his eighth goal. TheTeafter, the game once more swung in favour of Swan Districts, although Migro and Taylor were outstanding amid-field for the other side. Burger, from a mark, and Bee from a free in front, scored ful

points for Swan Districts in quick succession, and another magnificent dash forward was capped with his fifth and his side's tenth goal. The final scores were: — EAST FREMANTLE 13.11 (89pts.) SWAN DISTRICTS .. 10. 5 (65pts.) v Goalkickers.— East Fremantle: G. Doig (8). Fordham (2), Snell (2), and Reynolds. Swan Districts: Cook (5), Bee (2), Gorn, Ford and Burge. ' The player of the match' was Fordham, East Fremantle's centre half-forward. . Marking brilliantly,' playing in a straightahead style; and opening up the forward ?play, he., greatly .assisted G. Doig ancl 3neJl in front -of goals. G. Doig again led put. cleverly, marked surely and kicked accurately. C. James was an able, defender, and Jarvis .was little behind him. McGlinn, Taylor and Migro did many, 'fine things and .showed great pace. Prosser was the best ruck man in the game. 5An outstanding exhibition of forward play-was given- by Cook of Swan, Districts, who marked: splendidly 'and worked hard to score five goals. Grieve was '-a com- ' petent centre ;player,-- Buckley acquitted ' limself ably in defence opposed to Ford- ' ' ham, and Bee, . Parkes, Bromhall, Clarke and Mosey were the best of the others. ??'.'? - .
