A STIRRING CONTEST.

East Perth Beats Swan Districts.

After a fast and spirited display of football at Bassendean Oval on Saturday before a large attendance, East Perth won narrowly from Swan Districts in a high-scoring contest. The vigour of the game, the exciting incidents of the play, and the closeness of the

scores, raised players and spectators alike to a high pitch of enthusiasm. The Swan Districts team was undoubtedly a trifle unlucky to lose. Building up a substantial lead in the first quarter, and, after determined play, remaining in front for the greater part of the game, it appeared likely Swan Districts would win. Somewhat ragged in the early stages of the game, East Perthdeveloped more cohesion as the game advanced, and probably it was a greater steadiness during the determined play of the last quarter which turned the game in its favour. It was unfortunate for the Swan Districts team that its captain (G. Bee), who had given an inspired displauy, was seized with cramp ten minutes before the end of the match, and was forced to leave the field when badly needed. The teams were very evenly matched and showed a marked improvement on their play of the previous Saturday. The teams were:- EAST PERTH.— Backs: M. Ryan. R. Ryan, Wood. Half-backs: Oswald, Boundy, G.Matson. Centres: Garnaut, Miller, Guhl. Half-forwards: Cronin, Dempster, King Forwards: Orr, Lockyer, Crow. Ruck: Mather, Booth, Screaigh (rover). Nineteenth man: Baker (replaced Orr, injured leg, in final quarter) SWAN DISTRICTS.- Backs: Reilly, McCrae, Penberthy. Half-backs: Buckley, Zilko, Clarke. NNineteenth man: McInnerney (replaced Bee during the final quarter) UMPIRE. - F.Collins The play opened vigorously with East Perth in attack. Only points resulted until Bee and Gorn collaborated to score two goals. The solidity of the East Perth defence frustrated further attacks, but with an excellent left-foot kick, Gorn scored his third goal. Excellent marking and clever forward leading had characterised Swan Districts play during the first term, which ended with East Perth in arrears-0.2 to 3.4. Good work by Mosey and Grieve on Swan Districts centre line produced a goal from Forbes at the commencemnt of the second quarter. The team were still surer in handling the ball than East Perth, but hte latter attacked determinedly, and reduced the leeway with two fine goals from Miller (now stationed at half-forward, with Cronin in the centre) and Crow. Both sides missed easy scoring opportunities, but Bee steadied Swan Districts and Parks kicked his teams fifth goal. Dempster and Grieve were playing brilliantly for their respective teams, and the standard of play was excellent. The quarter ended with two more goals to East Perth, and the tallies then were:- Swan Districts, 5.7; East Pert, 4.6. Bee dominated the ruck at the start of the third term, and sent Swan Districts in attack repeatedly. He co-operated with Gorn and a goal resulted, and soon after he scored another with a running shot Mosey to Gorn to Dawes produced Swan Districts eigth goal, and East Perth was temporarily demoralised. Dashing play by Wood and Matson, however, send East Perth foward, where Crow and Screaigh scored full points. When Screaigh and Garnaut scored further goals, East Perth took the lead, but Swan Districts regained the advantage just before the bell. At three-quarter time the scores were East Perth, 8.14; Swan Districts, 9.14. Swan Districts tenth goal was kicked by Bee at the begining of the fourth term, but with Guhl and Cronin playing well near the centre, East Perth attacked vigorously, scoring three goals and a few points, in a great forward rush. Parks at the other end, brilliantly ran past several opponents to kick a goal. Zilko and Oswald were defending well in this quarter, and Garnaut was playing impressively on the wing. Dawes's snap-shot produced Swan Districts 12th goal, and regained the lead for his side. In the closing stages, East Perth steadiedm goals from Wood and Screaigh sealing the issue. A fine game ended with the scores:-EAST PERTH 13.17 (95 pts.) SWAN DISTRICTS 12.15 (87 pts.)
