! THE TASMANIAN ELECTION.

I Sydney, March 28.

Mr. G. H. Reid received a telegram to-day from the Freetrade Association of Launceston, informing him that in the election for the seat of the late Mr. Piesse. Mr. H. R. Hartnell has receiv-ed 1,000 more votes than all the other candidates put together and that Sir E. N. Braddon and the Tasmanian division of the members of the House of Repre-sentatives congratulated the Leader of the Opposition on -bis triumphal vic-tory. Mr. Reid replied. "Thanks ! Hartnell's triumnh overshadows the inevi-table fate of the Barton Ministry."

Hobart, April 2.

Mr. W, C. Whitelaw has lodged a pe-tition against Mr. Hartnoll taking bis seat in the Federal House of Represen-tatives, on the ground that the election was invalid, through Mr. Hartnoll not signing his nomination paper.

- At the formal declaration of the Fede-ration to-day. Mr. Hartnoll was declar-ed, duly elected, no objection being

raised.
