GREAT EASTERN HIGHWAY.

Name Favoured by Department.

The Mundaring Road Board, at a meeting yesterday, received a letter from the Commissioner of Main Roads (Mr. E. Tindale) statins that the board's wish' that

the section of the Midland JunctionMerredin road through the Mundaring district should be re-named the Great Eastern Highway, commended itself to the Main Roads Department. The letter added:— 'It is agreed that it would be little use re-naming the section of road that passes through the Mundaring district without giving a more general application to the proposal, that is to say, to apply the new name to the full length of the road from Midland Junction to Kalgoorlie. The suggestion therefore has been communicated to all local authorities whose districts are traversed bv the road, in order that they may indicate their desires ill the' matter. The name, the Great Eastern Highway, has been put forward, but this is left open for an expression of opinion by the local authorities concerned.' Mr. J. E. Jones: Why do we need to call it the Great Eastern Highway? Why not the East-West Highway? The Chairman (Mr. A. W. Brown) : We have already put forward the suggestion that it should be called the Great Eastern Highway, and we cannot go back on our resolution. The board agreed it would continue to advocate that the road be named the Great Eastern Highway.
