SWAN DISTRICTS' FIRST WIN.

Subiaco Overwhelmed in Last Quarter.

Finishing with overwhelming pace and power Swan Districts won its first victory in league football on Saturday when it defeated Subiaco by 40 points at Bassendean Oval. Prior to the commencement of play the chairman of the

Bassendean Road Board (Mr. R. A. McDonald) officially opened the ground and he bounced the ball for the start of play. A group of officials were present at the function, including the president of the West Australian National Football League (Mr. W. Stooke) and the secretary (Mr. W. R. Orr) and Mr. W. D. Johnson, M.L.A., who takes an active interest in the new club. Badly beaten in the first quarter through out which it played crudely, Swan Districts rallied and its football improved quarter by quarter until in the closing minutes of the game it was playing as if inspired. Although it led, almost through out the first three quarters, Subiaco had no chance in the final term. Fierce forward rushes carried out at terrific pace and with great power swept the Subiaco defence aside and left its ruck hopelessly beaten. Subiaco led at 7.4 to 3.0 at the close of the first quarter, and it seemed that Swan Districts would be well beaten. The pace was fast and Subiaco monopolised the play. The new team showed extrodinary vigour and spirit, but its kicking was poor and its handling of the ball crude. The complexion of the game changed entirely in the second quarter. Working up pace which, it seemed, would exhaust its stamina quickly. Swan Districts hurled itself into the play. It's ruck dominated play in the centre of the ground, players, big and small fought through scrimmages, and, when the bell rang Subiaco went to its dressing rooms still in the lead, but a rattled team. The scores were then Subiaco, 9.7; Swan Districts, 9.1. Again in the third quarter the new team fought a hard, active fight, its pace being even greater than previously. Subiaco held only a five-point lead when the last quarter started and it was unable to hold it for more than a few minutes. With its centre and half-forward lines in brilliant form, Swan Districts went into attack from the start and for 25 minutes it sustained a

fierce onslaught at a pace which was truly remarkable in view of the pace of the three previous quarters. It added eight goals, Subiaco goaling only once. The final scores:- SWAN DISTRICTS 19.9 (123 pts.) SUBIACO 12.11 (83 pts.) Goal-kickers:- Swan Districts. Gorn (4), Dawes (4), Cook (4), Hellmrich (3), Parkes (2), Bee and Forbes. Subiaco: Jennings (4), Smith (3), Green (2), Mullineux (2), and Daily. Grieve at centre was the outstanding player of the game and in a team of which every member did his share, others who played extremely weel were Mosey (a great fighting wingman). Krepp. Parkes, Forbes (who dominated the ruck), Dawes, Cook, Bee and Gorn. Subiaco's best player was Green and he was given support by Smith, L. Toll, F. Brophy, Kelly and Roe.
