PERTH CITY COUNCIL

A Tennis Club's Courts.

The North Perth Tennis Club's dissatisfaction with a ruling by the City Gardener in respect of the club's courts was discussed at Monday's meetine of the

Perth City Council. The club desired to commence play on its courts on November 3, but permission was refused by the gardener, because, in his opinion, the courts were not in a fit condition. An alternative request by the club for the temporary use of six courts at Robertson Park was also referred to the council for decision. , Cr. Langley supported the attitude of the gardener, and moved that the club's request be refused. He said the club had ill-treated its own courts and now wished to monopolise courts that were being let to people who, for a considerable time, had played on them regularly. The motion was carried. A letter was received from Mr. H. Bushby, manager of the Australian -Test team, which recently returned to Australia, and was tendered a civic reception at Perth, expressing 'deep appreciation of the welcome by the citizens of Perth.' A request by the Under-Secretary for Lands that Ascot-road be re-named Great Eastern-highway was agreed to. It was stated that this road was part of the main artery of communication between the goldfields and Perth, and that all other local authorities concerned had agreed to the new name. ,' The draft of a revised scheme for the establishment of a new infectious diseases hospital, and method of financing it, was received and referred to the finance committee for consideration. ,| For the forthcoming municipal elections Cr. Menzies was elected unopposed as returning officer. ' Approval was given to a proposal from the Public Works4 Department for the truncation of the corner of the Leederville school grounds, at the entrance to the Leederville Oval, for a distance of 20 feet both ways from the existing corner. 1 The co-operation of the council was sought by the Subiaco Council, which has applied to the Lotteries' Commission for sufficient money for the erection of a shelter shed near the Children's Hospital, at the intersection of Hay and Thomas streets. It was agreed to cooperate provided the shed was not to oe erected on either of the garden plots on the city side of the circus. It was decided to renew the grant of £300 to the Infant Health Association. : Application for Bus Stand. The Federal Bus Service, Ltd., applied for a stand on the south side of St. George's-terrace, between the United Service Hotel and the T. and G. Buildings, for the company's omnibuses proceeding to City Beach. It was decided to reply that the council could not see its way to arrange for a stand to be gazetted in this position, but had no objection to the continuance of the arrangement previously made with the Traffic Department for the picking up of passengers at this point during week-ends and public holidays. A recommendation by the works committee was adopted that the following work in the North Perth Ward be put in hand: — Sydney-street (Hobart-street to Gill-street), construct foundations, tar and sand, £495; Shakespeare-street, extend northwards, foundations only, tar dressed, £345. On the recommendation of the health committee, it was decided to instruct the chief health inspector to prepare a circular setting out the responsibilities of householders in connexion with the prevention of breeding of mosquitos on their premises, and that quotations be invited for the printing of sufficient copies of the bircular for distribution by the various inspectors to all householders in the municipality.
