!" To THE EDITOB. j
SIB,-As the matter of rewards for the ! , discovery of payable goldfields in Western
Aostralia is still in abeyance, wilt you kindly % allow me to publicly announce my claim as 7 the discoverer of the " Southern Cross " .' goldfield. When leaving the (rolden Valley

in May, 1888,1 was accompanied by Messrs. Faulkner and Parry, who were not associated with me ; bat as both of them were entirely innocent of any know-
ledge of bashoraft they asked permission: to follow er accompany me, which I granted.. . Exploring my way south, I ultimately arrived
at what ia now called Southern Cross, and pros; peoting around found gold-bearing quarts on
the site of the claim known as the " Phoenix.' Having thus accomplished the objeot of my expedition, I returned to the valley and took. - ont Sisely, and the olaim was pegged on
bebau* of the syudioate wo represented.
The Southern Cross may now oome, I suppose, under the denomination of á payable \ goldfield, and my olaim as its discoverer
thus simply stated-is generally acknow'." lodged en the field, and I fearlessly challenge
anyone to npset it. ' '
