Western Mail (Perth, WA : 1885 - 1954), Saturday 19 December 1885, page 1
A NEW WEEKLY JOURNAL,
----
There is a general impression that the time has come when a first class weekly paper, in a form somewhat dif-
ferent from the weeklies now in circu-
lation, would prove a success in West-ern Australia. Hitherto the weekly
journals here have been but the Satur-day or Wednesday issues of the dailies. This want of a weekly on a distinct footing, and acceptable to all sections of the population, the Propri-etors of the " WEST AUSTRALIAN " have determined to endeavour to sup-ply, by publishing every Saturday, a new paper to be called " THE WEST-ERN MAIL."
The new journal will contain a re-print of so much of the week's news from the " WEST AUSTRALIAN " as may be thought of general interest.
In addition it will have Original Ar-ticles, Notes, and Essays on various subjects, following, indeed, in all re-spects the example of similar weeklies in Eastern Australasia. Great atten-tion will be devoted to the Farm and Station, the fullest information being given on all Agricultural and Pastor-al questions, Sporting items of all kinds will form a leading feature. In lighter departments, short Tales and serial Stories will appear in each is-sue. Wit and Humour, Riddles, and other amusing items of all kinds will find a place in its columns. In short it is trusted that what the "AUS-TRALASIAN," " SYDNEY MAIL," "QUEENSLANDER," and " OBSERV-ER" are to their respective colonies,
"THE WESTERN MAIL" may
prove to Western Australia.
In politics it will emphatically be-long to no party, or rather to all par-
ties, advocating the joint interests of all classes, and opinions, pursuing in party questions a neutral, and in common questions a national, policy. The Country Edition of "THE
WESTERN MAIL," will be publish-ed, for the convenience of despatch by mail on Friday, and the Town Edi-tion on Saturday. For the present it will consist of 24 pages, and its price will be 6d. The agents for the " WEST AUSTRALIAN " (which will still con-tinued to be issued daily as formerly), will also act for " THE WESTERN MAIL."
" THE WESTERN MAIL" will be supplied to subscribers, for six
months and upwards, at the rate of
£1 2s. 6d. per annum; and to all
others at the rate of 6d per copy. The first number will be published on Friday 18th December, 1885.
THE WESTERN MAIL
IS published Weekly. It contains all the News
of the Week, Farm and Station Reports, Sporting, Stories, Humour, Ladies' Column, etc.
