A GOLDFIELDS STATION

HOMESTEAD.

(By "Riverina.")

Whilst on a recent visit to Menzies I was invited by Mr. H. W. Manuel to spend a few weeks at his station, 70 miles distant. Some two years ago Mr. Manuel took up 340,000 acres of country and purchased 230,000, making in all 570,000, with which he formed the valuable " Sturt's Meadows" station. Since then Mr. Manuel has taken Mr. Barrett Lennard into partnership, the latter acting in the capacity of manager. During my stay Mr. Lennard drove me through the run, which is without doubt

one of the finest pastoral properties in the colony, and compares more than favourably with the country in the North-West district, with most of which the writer is well acquainted. Up to the present the proprietors have nine wells of an average depth of twenty feet, yielding splendid supplies of good water, and it is their intention to considerably augment this number in the near future, thus ensuring a sufficient water supply for a very large number of stock. " Sturt's Meadows " being, as it is, within such easy access of all the eastern goldfields, Messrs.

Manuel and Lennard should have no difficulty

in controlling these important markets, and in the event of the Mount Leonora railway being constructed, these enterprising squatters intend to supply the southern markets, Mount Leonora being only 30 miles from the station homestead and 12 miles from the boundary. From its position this property should prove one of the best-paying concerns in the district,

and its fortunate owners should in the

near future be amongst the leading rank of successful pastoralists of Western Australia.
